Okay, the other day I went into my local home cinema shop (The Flicks in Bangor) and I had an eye opening experience.

In their demo room they were showing Shrek on a projection screen. The room was no bigger than a typical mid sized bedroom/lounge. I'd estimate about 14" x 10".

The projector (a sony I believe) was in the roof and the screen was hanging about a foot out from one of the long walls with a sofa on the opposite side. It was one of those motorised drop down numbers.

The picture was about 7" accross and unbelievably clear and detailed. Way better than ANY TV i've ever seen and better than most if not all the cinemas i've been in.

I've always been under the following mistaken impressions.
1) The projector needs to be a long way away from the screen for a big picture. (Nope, about 4-5 feet away i'd estimate.)
2) The projector needs to be level (or close to level) with the screen. (Nope, in the ceiling above the top of the frame and still the picture was perfectly 90 degree cornered)

I was utterly gobsmacked and now I have to ask why on Earth do people buy big Plasma screens when this will blow them away at about a third to half the price and give a much bigger screen to boot.

Yep, I am constantly amazed by how the newer and newer projectors I get in presentation rooms are so much better than the last. The compensation for angled projection is now amazing and the clarity simply stunning. It's just getting a roof-mounted one past the board that is still the problem :D

You don't have to have them hanging down from the ceiling. You could have it in say a custom made coffee table, on the coffee table or even on a shelf above the sofa etc.

Good point Bap, my thought has always been to get a stand that can go up and down (like an office chair) and have it on that. Placed behind the sofa, the thing is totally hidden when not needed.

What about noise from the fan? My old Sanyo makes a hell of a noise.

A work colleague just pointed out that my original post in this thread is suffering from Spinal Tap "Stonehenge" syndrome.

Surprised no-one else picked up on it and tore me one. :D

I have an LCD Projector and I find that animations, esp the likes of Antz, Toy Story and Shrek CGI efforts, look absolutely stunning on the grey screen. Stunning.
