View Full Version : Will DVD-R make my nice (but expensive) collection redundant?

No one bothers to tape video to video as the degradation in picture and sound is so bad but when DVD-R comes along, why should I shell out £15 for a DVD when I can rent it and copy it?

Thinking about this makes me a bit disilusioned with spending £3000+ on DVDs. Should I stop buying DVDs now as I could be effectively wasting my money?

Sorry to sound so miserable! :(

It is bound to reduce the number of DVDs people buy, but I still bought plenty of VHS tapes when I could have recorded them off Sky.

Have you had a look at the price of DVD-R. They are around £15 at the moment. This may come down as more people buy them but not for a while and I believe that the price may being kept artificially high as a sop to the Film industry.

As a collector rather just a watcher I would perfer to have the original. I don't see how it is any different from CD's which I have quite a few as opposed to copied tapes (which I probably haven't had since I started a job)

Alternatively yes your collection is now worthless. I take it off your hands for £5.50 and packet of polos

:D

price has been dropping steadily recently. 3.50 pounds now each - http://www.business-ecommercesoftware.co.uk/business/svpcomm/Online_Catalogue_DVD_R_Discs_16.html

If (when -on a standard PC) it's possible to copy a DVD and it's the same disc essentially then I'd prolly buy them. I'm only bothered about the movie at the end of the day but I wouldn't buy a pirate disc just to save £5 if the quality isn't up to what I'm used to.

wouldn't this just be the same situation as with mp3's and CD's? or very similar anyway. Don't think cd sales has gone down dramatically.

But at the moment, all writable DVD tech is limited to single layer, and since most movies come on RDSL's...
