I think the future of dvd will be taken over by MP4 Video and Digital Video Memory Chips. I would say this will happen in ten years time ? This probably is the way of ineminent Digital Video Technology !
People have been predicting the demise of mechanical carriers for decades, but I can't see it happening (at least not for a very long time) - for sure, storage technology will have advanced in ten years time for the contents of a DVD to be put on some portable memory chip - but by then DVD will have moved on to a new format, music carriers will be at even higher sampling rates, and the new storage chips will not have sufficient capacity. Such is the way of the world.

What is also the way of the world is that the general public will only adopt a new mass medium every couple of decades or so - so we're going to be stuck with DVDs for a good few years yet!

I have 200-300 DVDs and I ain't updating them -That's it finished. I've had VHS for nigh on 20 years and I'm only changing now to DVD.
My money is sticking with DVD and if that's stopped I'll not be changing them. DVD offers me everything I want.
Video on demand is coming, we already have near vod ( Sky Boxoffice) but I don't think it will replace DVD or DVD like systems for sometime, if ever.
The reason is, ownership.
Take T2 UE, sexy packaging, 11 hours of extras, not to mention true random access and different sound formats, and..... the list goes on!
And you can touch it, it's yours. Some box in the corner with a zillion gigabytes of storage, (imagine the virus that sucker will carry!) isn't near as sexy.
