I would like to take ownership of thousands of nested user folders - but , its important that I dont overwrite the permissions already there - I cant see how to do it through the windows GUI as it replaces the permissions - it doesnt add to them. (my aim is to just give me the right to read and copy the folders and permissions to migrate them onto a NAS)

I have tried cacls to grant Administrator ownership - but it just returns access denied messages.

migration woes :(

I found this 'CHOWN' utility on Google Groups :- http://wwwthep.physik.uni-mainz.de/~frink/nt.html

Might be worth a look :)

hehe im not sure if that was a sly dig to try a search engine before I post (which I genuinely did - but im blocked from most) , but non-the-less thanks my man - that will do very nicely indeed.

Not a sly dig! I've searched for some stuff for hours finding nothing, only for some smart Alec to tweak my search and then I get inundated with answers!

Well, that tool works nicely at taking ownership - now for the xcacls to give myself read :)
