I am guessing that the kit is all daisychained together? If so, that is why as the TV won't pass through the signal to the VCR. Ideally you should try to get the chain running in the following way;

DVD to
VCR to
TV

VCRs will pass through SCART based signals even with the power off (standby at least) TVs often don't.

Does your DVD have 2 scarts?
If so, do this:

AV2 (TV) AV1<->AV1 (DVD) AV2<->AV1 (SKY) AV2<->AV2 (VCR) AV1
^---------------------------------------------------------------^

So you have a big circle of scarts.
You then record Sky by telling the video to record AV2

tv has 3 scarts

Was that the question that I asked?
Never mind...

OK, My suggestion to you is this:

TV AV1<->SKY AV1 (RGB)
SKY AV2<->VCR AV2 (composite)
DVD<->TV AV2/3 (SVid) (also depends on what VCR should be connected to TV on for smartlink/qlink if it is necessary)
VCR AV1<->TV AV2/3 (composite)

The above assumes only 1 TV scart is RGB capable and that you watch more SKY than DVD.
OK so your DVD is no longer in RGB but you can only have one RGB source unless your DVD has scart pass through...

Well in that case you'll have to watch the sky in composite then (or get a sky digibox with an SVid connector such as the new Grundig or Pace Sky+ box). Just do as I said before and swap it around to put the DVD on TV AV1 and the sky box on TV AV2/3.
Basically, you want the TV, SKY and VCR in a big scart loop.
Some VCR's will be fine connecting through the sky box without having a direct connection to the TV. You would have to try to be sure.
In that situation wou would:
TV AV1<->DVD (RGB)
TV AV2<->AV1 (composite) SKY AV2<->AV1 VCR (composite)

but you would lose any smartlink connection between the VCR and TV (up to you if you think this is useful)

I think JonnyO has now solved the problem, but just for clarity and assuming you don't need/want to record DVD but do want to record sky then this would seem simple enough;

DVD Out to TV AV (with RGB)
SKY Out 1 to TV AV
VCR Out to TV AV
Sky Out 2 to VCR In

That way the TV can be on or off and the signal from the Sky box to the VCR is now direct.

Might be aload of horlicks but can't you have the.....

DVD out to TV AV1 (RGB)
SKY OUT 1 to VCR in
VCR out to TV AV2?

You will be able to tape Sky with telly switched off and you could tape the dvd player but the telly will need to be switched on. This is how I have my ITV Digital set up anyway. Cuts down on the amount of scart cables needed as well.

Sorry to drag this one up ,im getting the exact same problem with my sony 28 LS60 skybuy, paidŁ275

Its got 3 scarts 2 RGB capable, ive got dvd in one, s-vhs vcr in another and the digibox in another one.

I get a blank screen recording ,when the tv is turned off, this smarlink thing is crazy.

uh? why do you connect the video to the tv at all? I though the 2nd scart on sky boxes was like the cable boxes, its an in<>out.

Besides you have two rgb scarts so why not have dvd in one then sky>vcr>tv in the other?

If you can't/wont do it this way, check the tv setup, as you'll probly find one of the scarts can be the monitor (ie output), so your vcr will have to be connected to that, also you'll probly find a setting as to what the monitor scart outputs.

Most of the Sky Digiboxes do RGB passthrough in the 2nd SCART input by the way.

i know why i didnt pass through the sky box with the vcr now, ive got a s video vcr ,so i use the s video output through the scart, (selected to output s vid) to the s video enabled scart socket.

Is there a pin i can cut on the scart plug, to stop this smartlink ,cant disable it,

does your VCR have 1 or two scarts?

well connect the sky box, tv and vcr in a big loop:
Sky scart 1 -> TV scart 1 (RGB)
VCR Scart 1 -> TV Scart 3 (SVid)
Sky Scart 2 -> VCR Scart 2 (composite)
DVD Scart -> TV Scart 2 (RGB)

Now you have RGB connection for Sky and DVD on the TV. An SVid connection for the VCR on the TV. To record Sky you select Scart 2 on the VCR.
