View Full Version : TV Calibration DVD ???
Whats a good DVD to buy for TV / DVD calibration.
I've heard a lot about specialised calibration discs, but personally, I've just used the THX-setup stuff on the likes of T2UE and TS UTB....I used the T2 one and I think the contrast, brightness, etc. are all looking pretty much perfect now.
 I tried to use this for the first time last night i was plenstly surprised to find i already had it all bang on!!!!! And this was just useing my eyes while playing several DVD's!!!!!! for those instrested i have a Tosh RPTV and the settings are
Brightness: 30
Contrast: 45
Colour: 45
Sharpness: +20
NR: on
Stupid (probably) Q. from a non-techie...
- Do you need to have access to the tv "service mode" in order to set this up properly?
Depends on your tv but (normally) no. Most TVs will let you get at brightness and contrast. Convergence (unless its RPTV) will likely be tucked away in service mode. Tint and or sharpness may also not be immediately available. Geometry settings are almost always hidden.
In most cases, setting the reachable settings in service mode allows you to recalibrate the scale, eg.
Brightness: 30 / 100
Contrast: 45 /100
Colour: 45 / 100
Sharpness: +20
can be set to 50,50,50,0 with the same effect. You can then tweak them specific to the disc / source if need be.
Incidentally Roberto, that sharpness seems way high. It may be particular to my set, but I've never found NR or sharpness to add anything to my picture. Sharpness just edge enhances everything, and NR just messes with the image.

Each TV is going to be different but I have used THX Optimode previously then got hold of Video Essentials when DVDTalk had the offer, since then I have used VE with its blue negative like strip and this gives even further checking capabilities over THX.
I noticed that I had to have greater brightness, colour and 0 sharpness.
If your using S-Video or Component connections you should have 0 Sharpness due to it's purpose for compensating for NTSC Filtering.
Also with Component, Tint should be set to 0 although with other connections this will be used!
Thanks guys.
I think I have basic reachable settings: brightness, colour, contrast.
Incidentally, when I hooked up my tv via a Scart lead, the picture turned noticably darker

I up the sharpness to get everthing well defined then take the noise/grain away with NR. Hence a sharp but smooth picture. Try it! then compare to mode 3 (If indeed you have a tosh)
PS i've got a 40WB03B, if that means anything
Cheers Roberto,
I've got the 43PJblahdiblahwhat, so I'll give that a go.
Stu, every Sony I've ever owned goes darker on RGB scart. They also all pull left an inch, but hey...
