Was about to post this as just got back from PC World in Shirley, Solihull picked up a few copies. Had loads of copies and posters outside advertising the 1/2 price offer.

Apparently it has been TV-advertised too.

This 'exclusive' PC World version also includes Norton Go Back 4.0 too, the non-exclusive one is £44.95 on Amazon so a good saving, upgrade CDROM is £25.99 so a £1 saving for upgrades but still a £1 is a £1 !

Hi - I currently run Norton 2002; would this just overwrite that? Or would I have to uninstall etc?

"As seen on TV!" :D. My sub's due this month so I may just go for this, although it's not the professional version unlike the current one I've got (which I think worked out £35 online when I got it).

Not a problem though. Just turn off ad-blocking either completely or for the two domains (thedvdforums.com and .co.uk).

Hi - I currently run Norton 2002; would this just overwrite that? Or would I have to uninstall etc?

It will upgrade it most likely, so it will probably keep your existing settings.

And just to please... don't forget if you own NIS already and thinking of ordering from the PCWorld link above... turn off the ad-blocking and referrer blocking on thedvdforums.com and .co.uk, before you click on the link. That way the site shouldn't lose income ;)

uninstall 2002 first

I went straight from NIS 2004 to 2005 without uninstalling, no problems at all. (Of course 2002 may be totally different...)

The 2005 version is only available in ONE version, they didn't bother with a 'professional' release this time.

Must be an option as I don't have these :p

Are you using Win98? I know NIS 2004 messes up Win98 big time, but on XP with SP1 it works like a dream (with a fast PC of course :D). It also is much improved on performance when you download the updates.

SP2 might be another matter but currently my response to that is made up of the words...

Might just nip over to PCWorld tonight and see what they've got. I normally detest setting foot in there though.

Hmm, my sub to Norton runs until July, but I suppose could buy this now at a low price and install it then.

It should still be the current version.

Might sound like a stupid question but is Norton Internet Security a firewall? I currently use ZoneAlarm Pro with Norton Antivirus 2004, so is NIS 2005 a replacement for both?

Yep, NIS 2005 is Firewall and Antivirus. I believe it also has a Spam filter and "parental control"

Can you run norton conjunction with xp's own security center ,which has it's own anti virus and firewall ?

XP doesn't have anti-virus, only a firewall.

NIS (and other firewall products) will advertise themselves as a firewall and XP should turn off it's own firewall when you install them. They are replacements for XP's firewall (which is fairly basic).

NIS includes Norton AntiVirus too so it will satisfy XP's security center which alerts you to not having an anti-virus product if you haven't installed one.

Norton especially works better if you connect to your ISP at least once a day as it now updates almost that frequent, whereas others are once a week.

Incorrect. McAfee now update at least daily, and often more, and Kaspersky now update hourly, the first AV firm to do so.

I'd be very surprised if Sophos and Trend were weekly as well.

And as for Norton slowing machines only if they're old or knackered, that's simply nonsense - I've seen it slow 2 brand new machines to a crawl. Norton will have a hard time moving me from the superior McAfee product as a result.

I "dumped" Norton IS 2004 - even though I had 4 months of sub left for following reasons:

(1) Really slowed down my machine - in particular whillst internet browsing (my pc is not slow - 3.2Gig P4 + 1gig RAM + RAID) - went to Zonealarm Internet Security and browsing was much quicker

(2) Update errors and general crashes - I occasionally (once every 2 months or so) got a helpful error message from Norton "an error has occurred please re-install "

(3) Updates are huge and you can't download the updates on their own - ie when you reinstall PC - after installing Norton I feel you are left open for the period of time it takes to update to latest.

Zonealarm IS is same price .. 24.99 ish if you select competitive upgrade option on Zonelabs website - only thing is though you have to get ISDN code for IS 2004 (amazon.com !) - as UK ones don't seem to have an ISDN code recognised by the software on Zonelabs site.

Just my opinion !

well I have never had aproblem with it to be honest. it does its job well. and the new 2005 version does cut down in usage of system resources from 2004.

It has also claimed the A List accolade in the latest issue of PC Pro which means it does do a good job, despite some peoples "opinions"..

where is the referred blocking within NIS 2003 as I can't find it as I still can't use alot of the referral links from the forums and I have done everything from the thread which sayd about fixing it

was in PC World (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=1078&a=60823&g=19560) and overheard a conversation between some sales staff. They had just sold a 're-seller' customer 250 copies of Norton and after shipping them out, realised it says ' Exclusive to PC WORLD' on the front of every box..

Also smth about a memo from head office not to sell more than 5 per customer.

Problem I had with ZoneAlarm is it's very alarmist for your average user. The thing with Norton is it has regularly updated rules for all the common applications so you don't end up with endless prompts all the time which confuses the hell out of a lot of users who don't really understand firewalls. Not only that but it used to blue screen my PC a lot, and it didn't have anywhere near the depth of configuration options that NIS has.

Also, you have to remember that NIS is more than just a firewall, it includes Norton AntiVirus and that is generally regarded as the best AV software. Plus now it's got anti-spam as well.

I don't know about NIS 2003, but in NIS 2004 you select 'Privacy Control' and 'Configure', then 'Advanced', and in there you can set up exceptions for individual domain names and sites. You want to permit "Information about visited sites". This is the key one which allows the referrer field in HTTP to be passed through when you click on web links, and some sites depend on that to work.

If it's not under Privacy Control it might be under the options menu for NIS, as I think it was in older versions.

P.S. As this is a Bargain thread, any NIS bashing and general NIS issues should be in the Computing forum. I'm surprised at Splobber encouraging it considering this kind of thing is normally frowned upon in the bargain forums ;)

Picked it up for my Work laptop, which I use pretty infrequently. It was cheaper than updating Bullguard for one machine for a year (I've got 1 bullguard sub which covers my 3 other machines and you can't use it with 4).

Seems OK, my laptop's slow at the best of times, so the addition of NIS2005 will be par for the course.

Just picked one up, cheers to the OP

The shelves were mostly empty, but they had some hiding in another aisle. There always is in PCWORLD if you just keep walking round.

Every other customer walking out of there had bought one.

I have had Systemworks 2003 running for 11 months now and Im very happey with it :)

I looked into renewing today to find I can get a further 12months of antivrus for £17 or upgrade to systemworks 2005 for £232

2003 dont work so well with SP2 so in a quandry now.

If i get this from PC World (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=1078&a=60823&g=19560) can I still use the other bits from Systemworls 2003?

Or just get SWks 2004 from ebay for £22.

Or pay Norton £17?

?

Or buy the SystemWorks 2005 Premier Upgrade for £39.99 from PC World (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=1078&a=60823&g=19560) as I did yesterday. Think the standard Systemworks 2005 is cheaper still.

That might be perfect!

Any idea if I can jump from 2003 to 2005 directly?

Don't see why not, one think I have noticed about Symantec Upgrades over the years, it never checks for a previous version. The only difference I can see other than the vastly reduced price is a red sticker on the box.

Would think there is something in the License Doc's though.

Just checked the one I bought yesterday and there's nothing stated anywhere.

I think 2004 was a bit of a dog. Check out the reviews on Amazon.

I've still got 2002 running fine. Hopefully 05 solves all the issues with the 04 version.

Me to. I had the same problem on my pc, so took it off and put norton 2003 back on which runs fine for me. I thought it might just have been norton 2004 didnt like my pc, so when i built a really high spec`d pc for a friend i put norton 2004 on it and it literally turned a 3ghz+ pc with 1gb ram into a zx spectrum. It was rediculous.

Lets hope norton 2005 is much much better.
