Just installed my DVD/floppy drives from my old PC into my new DELL and for some reason none of them are being detected. Neither is the one that was in there originally  However, I remember once it said the DVD drive was found but it had a problem with installation and never appeared again. The CD drive has also been detected a couple of times but think that had probs and said data on the CD was corrupted or something and I couldn't read anything (CD is fine btw). No sign of the floppy drive either  Any ideas? PS. They're all plugged in ok AFAIK.

IDE cables plugged in the right way, plus what's the full specs on that rig?

Are you gonna be host this time so I can take over all the bitching and whinning instead? :D :p

Plugged in the right way? All I know is the floppy cable is in the floppy connector and the CD/DVD cables are in the IDE connectors.

PS. P4 2.8 512 :) (& zenza keeps asking to come back :D)

Some cheap cables don't have the two notches on one side to prevent it being plugged in the wrong way...

EDIT: ahh, vast improvement from your 500MHz POS last year...

Controversial :D

Hmm...just unplugged the floppy/DVD drive (still in PC though) and the CD drive is back working again. Hopefully the morning work crew will be able to solve this for me

Don't know about the floppy, but how have you got the CD drives etc up on the master and slave jumpers? You need to have the one that is the end of the cable set to master and the one in the middle as slave ;)

Yeah, I'm fairly sure how that's they were.

When you say not recognised, do you mean by BIOS or the OS (both CD and floppy drives)?

Double check the master/slave jumpers on the New AND the Original CD drives. Make sure they are both set to cable select OR one set to master, one to slave. If that doesn't help see if the new drive will work in place of the original one (rather than in tandem).

On the floppy drive front, does the floppy controller have to be enabled from BIOS? Just a thought.

CD - the BIOS detected the old drive and the OS did on occasions
(but for some reason it wouldn't let me read files on the CD?)
Floppy - don't think that's ever been recognised

Will try your suggesstions in a mo and will report back with results, thanks :)

PS. I'm fairly sure I did enable it but will have to recheck that after I've reconnected it...

 The old one was set as CS and the DVD one I inserted I had as master. Changed the 'old' CD writer to slave and everything is dandy  Will have a little play in the bios now to see if I can get the a drive to work although that's not as important as the other drives :)

Also can't detect my newly installed firewire card, do you think it would need the drivers installed for that? (can't remember if it came with them and if so, where they are)

Depends on the card, but it may use the standard Microsoft ones. Check Device manager for a heading of IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller and see if anything is listed and whether it has an exclamation mark next to it. Try removing the card, rebooting into Windows and then checking Device manager again. Then put the card back in and see if anything's detected. If that doesn't work, it would help if you could list the make and type of Firewire card as that'll help track down the required drivers.

Seems like my firewire card wasn't inserted fully so I did this but still not recognised :( No sign of a IEEE 1394 bla bla bla though although after I'd re-added the card, on booting up windows it said something like some USB human interface had been detected and installed (not sure if that's a anything to do with the firewire card though). Don't even know the make of the card, my Dad got it for me so may have to check with him at some point to see if he has any idea.

Found the box and it looks like no driver installations are needed. It's a DV-1000LE IEEE 1394 PCI Host Controller (to give it its full name :D). It says it's an Open Host Controller Interface compliant IEEE...(see above) and so I don't need to install any drivers under the following OS's...(basically all of them). It says a host controller should be detected as you said so it's a mystery why it hasn't been (sure I've inserted it fine in the PCI slot?). Strange..

Does anything appear to be added in Device manager? Can you try moving it to a different PCI slot? What happens when you plug your firewire device in?

USB is different, unless the firewire card also has some USB ports on it.

Nothing that looks like the firewire card, installed ok on my old PC so that's why I can't understand what's wrong with this one. I can try moving it and will do so tomorrow when I give it another go. When I plug in the iPod dock nothing happens. The iPod appears to be charging but iTunes/iPod updater won't recognise it? Will try again tomorrow, thanks :)

It's this one isn't it http://www.ivmm.com/innodv/products_dv1000.html . Can't see any drivers for it on the innoDv website, I assume you are using XP?

Actually just found a cached google page and it says "No Driver is required for Windows 98SE / ME / 2000 / XP" for the DV 1000. If you look under device manager/devices do you have any yellow '!' (or is it '?') signifying hardware conflicts? If you do an 'add hardware' search does anything come up?

Other than that ?????

Close enough it's this one:

Box certainly looks different than the one I received (?) As I stated above, no drivers are needed ;) Done add hardware and I have no !s in my device manager. Will reinsert card later today as I said I would.

Working now :) Seems as if the card wasn't inserted as properly as I thought  Moved it to another slot but think the reason why it didn't work before is it came off its slot partly between the insertion and placing my comp back in the workstation  That's 3/4.........
