View Full Version : Symantec Antivirus can't live update through AOL Broadband connection
A friend or mine has AOL Broadband (via that little BT Voyager thingy box) and apart from being AOL (spit!) appears to be OK.
Also running zonealarm
BTW: they are also running Windows 98SE
Due to it not being a very powerful machine (800Mhz VIA CPU - Whatever the hell that is) they are running Symantec Antivirus corporate edition (Norton with the padding removed!)
Anyway, for some reason now, if you try and do a live-update it just pops up an error box basically reporting it's not on the internet and that some PC's need to be manally logged onto the net before you press the liveupdate button.
But we ARE on the internet you stupid bit of software.... Look I'm browsing a web page in Internet explorer !!!!
But it's still convinced it can't connect to look for updates.
I'm sure many many months ago when this was 1st installed it worked, but does not work now.
We even uninstalled the Antivirus and installed a newer version of the same product and at the very end of installation it asked to check for live updates (as they do) so I manually logged onto AOL Broadband (checked was working ok) and clicked check now for live updates, and again, even this never version of symantec antivirus corporate basically said can't connect to check cos not online.
Any thoughts ?

XP was on the machine, but (I'm guessing) as it's a horrible 800Mhz Via thing type CPU it was running slower and slower and slower.
I took it off and put 98 on it, and ran much faster.
That being said, for some reason it's running dead slow now, it's almost like it runs slower and slower the longer it goes on for. really weird.

Strange isn't it........ wonder why.....

Norton products are resorse hogs. You would have been better off removing Norton and leaving XP on. There are a few free antivirus programs about like AVG and Avast which are much better than Norton IMO.

This is been a bit of problem, but when I had AOL installed. You had to get AOL up and running then manually set Liveupdate away to run to see if there was any updates. It's a pain in the arse.

same problem here.

This has just happened to me over the last fortnight - has been updating OK until then
Also has happened to me before and I think I de-installed /reinstalled Nortons and live update worked again - until now!!
You can still manually update virus defintions via Symantecs website
Thanks for the help and advice.
Re Pirate, well I guess putting a copy of windows 98 that I have paid for onto my girlfriends computer to try help her out is piracy.
But hey I paid for 98 a few years back, she paid for XP a couple of years back. In my book, I don't think we've done too much wrong.

All my software is totally legit, and it still won't work.
I did update virus definitions from symantec site, but live update was much easier.
mmmmmmmm.....?????
