I am finding it really hard to decide whether or not to buy shrek. Part of me wants to part of me says no, what is the general consensus of the board? Plus R1 or R2? I am assuming from what i have read the features are the same on both. Please help put my mind at rest...Cheers, Burn.

If it's that difficult to decide then don't. You don't want it.

Burn,
in my humble opinion this has got to be a big fat YES. Saw this for the first time last week and enjoyed it immensly very funny, brilliantly animated and one of those films I think is really going to stand up after repeated viewings. I went R1 just because it has more special features than the R2.:D

R1 has DTS.

Not sure on other differences.

It's an OK film, overrated, but ideal for kids.

YES you should buy it.

R1 has more features but there mainly kids games. ( although the voice re dub thing is suppose to be good if you have a DVD Rom )
But on the plus side it also has a DTS soundtrack and a pan & scan version for those of you that like half the picture missing.

You can also win a prize with Burger King from a cover destroying sticker

R2 just gives you the best of the features and a top movie.

You can also win a prize with Quality Street from a cover destroying sticker.

Ummmmmmm
How about hiring it, if you really like it then consider buying it:rolleyes: (if you can afford it)
This system has worked brilliantly for me!

Burn - if you enjoyed it at the flicks then I'd say get it; it improves over a couple of watches - you pick up more of the in jokes etc.

HHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM??????????? Good thought George, may well do? The whole R1 wide and pan&scan thing does sell it to me tho.......GAH damn these decisions...damn having to spend money on dvds for my course which leaves me with the inability of being able to buy dvds for myself...ahwell the things we film students have to do eh?

Thanks for the help so far, keep it coming guys..TA.

I loved the film, and the picture is absolutely state of the art. Can't say I was too bothered about the extras, and the DTS sound wasn't exactly overwhelming (in fact, the surround mix was weirdly unadventurous for a film like this), so I can't see any great advantage in going for the R1.

Absolutely!!

Saw it for the first time when the DVD arrived (a week early from Britannia).

Didn't stop grinning from the animated menu till the end of the film.

Also quite possibly the best picture quality I've seen.

Another vote for it, though as a R1 purchaser I have to say that a lot of the documentary content is recycled, the DTS track is ok but the R4 may be a better buy, whatever- it is imho, a must for any collection.

I bought it on the strength of the reviews on this forum when it was at the cinema. Watched it for the first time last week and loved every minute.

Anybody with a sense of humour would be mad to miss this :D

What rubbish - this is the best film of the year and in my all time top 10 easily.

Get it - R1 or poss R2 from Asda £14.87

i would have enjoyed it more were it not for the terrible performance by eddie murphy. it's basically a watered down 48hrs performance. his ghetto speak just didn't fit in with the fairy tale settings. i kept on waiting for him to start talking about ho's gat's and nine's. just like jar jar binks i find him extremely irritating and a token ethnic character so as not to alienate a large proportion of the audience.

i could mention asses but that would be obvious.
the r1 dvd really shows the ntsc judder on some of the panning shots so if your not bothered about the extrasi would get the r2.

 if your setup suffers from this condition! if it doesn't, like mine and many others, then it's not an issue.

as for the thread - my vote would be don't buy it! i'd extend baps' view of 'overrated' to vastly overrated, trying to be too clever for its own good, not the sum of some of its very good parts, and suffers enormously from dreamworks' (i.e. jeffrey katzenberg's) enormous inferiority-to-disney complex.

Asda R2 incidentally also has music CD, Shrek sings Christmas. No idea what it's like tho as I bought the R1!
