"New" Crystal Xbox vs Old Black Xbox

It shouldn't matter, as the Xbox is designed to play games and DVDs of which it does.

It was not made to play DVDr so the fact it does or does not should not matter.

Isn't this down to what drive is installed in the box rather than the colour of the case...I have an old black box and a new crystal box, both have samsung drives installed which play ALL discs.

yeah, colour doesn't matter, it's how old it is. All new xbox's will be V1.6 regardless of colour and should have the same components. Older versions will/may be different.

Phillips drive in my new Crystal XBox... dunno how good they are from experience, but I've heard:

1) Sammy
2) Phillips
3) Thomson

1 = best

all version 1.6
all have 8gig hdds
all have (manufac date august 2004) phillips drives which reads :-

cd-r`s
cd-rws
dvd-rs
dvd-rws

and apparently +r`s as well

all are quieter (IMO)
the new phillips seems to run faster as well


as for them not being designed to run dvd-rs , they are, think its a sideline from a normal dvd.

u can use your xbox as a dvdplayer, and watch your home movies on them, and they do read dvd-rs without modification (only movies)

The drive on my crystal box is useless. I think it's a thompson one. Some discs are ok but others have real problems reading and have to be reinserted multiple times before it will read.

It's not just "home" movies either.

I have an extensive collection of archived from TV stuff and I'd like it to play them.

without modifcation, only thing you`ll need is a dvd remote, slap you "home" movie in and away you go :)

basically mate, ive never, ever seen a crystal xbox, neither the old limited edition ones, nor the newly availible ones come with any other drive other than a phillips one, and ive seen a few ;).

EDIT : JUST GOT ONE OF THE NEW CRYSTALS WIH A SAMSUNG DRIVE

if you bought it from new, from a shop then fair do`s, i cant explain it, but if youve bought it from some one then the drives been changed....................

i`m not stupid, there nt to everyones tastes, its all a matter of opinion, the blue on with the red jewel is my xbox, unfortunatly i wont be doing that mod to order as its not cost effective, and takes around 12 hours just to do the jewel alone.
originall i was gonna do it blue green, but decided to try red ah well , cant win them all.

will think about doing it for people if i can find a quicker way of doing it :(

as for pricing, i do a mail order service @ £60 including return delivery, but that does include the led mod on a joypad.

seriously though chaps, this does take a long time, around 10-12 hours, i try to keep the wiring down, and as inconspicous as possible, so with the xbox turned off theres really no way of telling the difference, unless you know what your looking at.

in all theres
4x leds on the front panel
4x leds inside the joypad ports (1 in each)
4x leds on the front panel eject button (can still keep the error lights)
6x leds under the jewel
5x leds in the joypad



just done a white one for somone with green jotpad ports, looks nice, gonna get some photos up tonight.

had some pictures published in "xbox world magazine" but they printed the wrong ones lol.

The fan is a fair bit noisier than my old black one and I plan to change it once it's out of warranty. And the drive doesn't play CD-R's.

so i`m guessing you bought it from a shop then spankers etc, very strange, thats a phillips drive and all the ones i had (from the limited edition crystal) read everything.

sure its not a media issue as in use good riteks and well cd-rs not sure, but all mine read them

Come to think of it, I recall a friend of mine with another Crystal Xbox said that it played certain CD-r's with a gold coloured side, but not the blue or non-coloured discs. I'll ask him tonight to refresh my memory.

Xbox's are very funny about the media they read you will need to try a few different brands before you find the right one. Have a look at the forum on xbox.com.
