View Full Version : Wharfedale M5 - Decoder DTS only?

A work colleague bought a Wharfedale M5 the other day.
He's having problems with the decoder. Says the manual claims that the decoder only outputs DTS and doesn't do dolby digital but both are available through the optical or coaxial digital outs.

Is this right? Does the decoder section on this player only output DTS? Seems bizarre if so. Or is there some setting to enable DTS and DD decoding.

"The new silver finish Wharfedale M5. Fitted with a wealth of features, this stylish new DVD player offers everything the videophile and audiophile could desire. On board Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, gold-plated connectors, plus MP3 compatibility - NOW ONLY £150" - straight from the Wharfie website.

Now I think I have made a big mistake. I sold my 750s and upgraded to a Cyberhome player. I didn't know the M5 had onboard DTS/DD........ahgahgahgahga.
Is the M5 any good?

That Wharfedale site text does seem to indicate a full decoder. I think my colleague probably has a setup "issue".

Any M5 owners care to comment on the correct settings for decoding DD and DTS?

The M5 most definitely has both types of decoder, but you'll only need them if you're hooking up to an old ProLogic amp that has 5.1 inputs. Otherwise, just connect up via a digital lead and ensure AUDIO is set to output DIGITAL rather than ANALOG.

Everything you need to know about the M5 is at Area 450 (http://www.area450.com) - click on the piccy of the M5 on the front page, and also look at the whole of The Sampo Zone section for tips on setting up your player :)
