yes - indeed 'woo hoo' !!

That's taken me by surprise - I was expecting the usual couple of months wait, but that's excellent news.

I guess Spiderman will hit U.K. screens in mid July?
We usually have the big summer movie in mid July.

This move by Lucasfilm is tops!!! :D

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the decision was to cut down on the forseeable trade in bootlegs that would result from staggered release dates

And to try to make sure that British viewers aren't able to wait for the American reviews before deciding not to go and see it... ;)

Don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars as much as the next guy, but after TPM I think there will be a bit more circumspection surrounding people's decisions to see AOTC. Hopefully it'll put the memory of the bad bits of TPM to rest, but you never know...

Out of interest, does anyone know if Lucasfilm has ever publicly acknowledged how much audiences hate Jar-Jar?

Lucas said in an interview with empire magazine when asked about why so many people hated Jar Jar that he was "only designed for the kids" or something to that effect - a subtle attempt to say "he was a bad idea" I think ;)

Great news on the release date - mainly cos I finish my end of year exams on the day before! Yay!

If that were true, then I doubt he would be in AOTC. (Or at least he would be written out fairly early in the film - hopefully slowly and painfully). :D

Unfortunately he is in the film. :(

He is in the film, but much less, and won't be so annoying when he is.

He'll probably be a more mature character in it (wouldn't exactly fit in with the dark mood of the film if he was the same as he was in the TPM :))

Great news about the release date, won't have them ***** from across the pond ruining it for us :D (and the first showings will be before their's due to the time difference :))

Same day release on both sides of the Atlantic? Can anyone say "Avengers"?

Yeah, but Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are getting a same day release. I think it's just the film company's wising up to a lot of people watching pirates before the release dates.

Or maybe it is linked to their DVD releases and the impact multi-region is having. With release dates matching in the cinema, DVD dates are likely to be very similar as well - just a though?

When are they going to realise the potential for cack jokes? If only it was being released 12 days earlier...

The piracy aspect is one that can't be ignored these days.

Thanks to cheap digital camcorders and broadband internet both being widely available, it is really easy for a high quality pirate copy to go round the world in no time at all.

And while there are the diehards who will go and see it in the cinema, I'm sure there are more people who quite want to see it and would make do with seeing a good widescreen copy on their television.

Last I heard, Spider-Man was getting a May 10 2001 release in the UK, but I guess that could change now.

This is a puzzling surprise, because the movie will miss the ultra-lucrative summer holiday (mid-July to end-August)period in the UK, AND, three weeks later, will run slap-bang into the World Cup. I guess that movie studios are gambling that with most of the matches being early-morning kick-offs GMT, that more people will be going to the cinema. It DOES mean, however, that the
DVD will probably be siimultaneous all regions. Amen to that. :)

If I remember correctly, wasn't Mummy Returns released around a similar sort of time, and that did OK, even for a crap film...so there's hope for AOTC.
I think it was May 4 in the US, and MAy 18 in UK.

It's funny how the threat of piracy seems to help us out in terms of people getting what they want at the price and time they want.

A few years ago I was in Hong Kong, pirate PC games were everywhere for a few pounds. Even better, you could buy the official boxed versions with instructions for £10 to £12.

And where can the rest of us get one of those babies? I want one! "A Jedi shall not know anger..... nor hatred....... nor love".

this means that we will be getting slightly before the americans due to the time differences involved :D

Part of the reason for the release date is that the original film was released about the same time in 1977. Also, someone also said it is being released a weekend before the weekend for one of the American holidays, so they are trying to ensure that it is available for that period.

More info on this will probably be forthcoming from various sources.
