View Full Version : MP3 / FM 128MB <£30 Dabs
Dabs have got a 128MB flash MP3/WMA player with built in FM radio for £32.98 delivered. Looks nice, but it would be good to know a bit more - like does it need a lead or plug in directly. Also, capacity is a bit small.

How many songs would this hold?

128mb worth :D
Roughly 1MB (maybe a bit less) per minute of MP3 @ 128kbps, so (very) roughly 130 minutes total. More for WMA I guess,

:p
so it would only hold 130 mins worth of songs on MP3 format? hardly seems worth it

If you only have a short train or bus journey, it's fine. Not something you'd want to take on holiday though or anywhere you can't easily change the tracks.

Nah, you can get a lot more than that on. It supports WMA, which is better to listen too at lower bitrates. I tried a few files using dbPoweramp this morning and found a 5m18s song takes 1.24MB at 32kb/s and it was surprisingly good to listen to. Certainly adequate for travelling. At that rate you can fit roughly 9hrs on there.
I have a 128MB player I picked up in China for about £15, if you record WMA's at 64K in media player, you can get about 5 albums on, which aint too bad and 64K WMA's sound OK as well.

When you say OK , that means not too good ?
How would i record wma in media player ?
Cheers
Ok meaning, sounds good enough considering it cost < £15, I'm happy with the sound quality if thats any reassurance.
As for Media Player, goto 'Tools > Options > Copy Music' then set the slider to 64Kbs
Hope this helps

Is the 256mb one a different model to the 128mb ?
is it a 'proper' fm radio (in the unit) or a really poor quality one put in to the headphones?!?!
cheers, dan

Built in I think, they don't even mention headphones. Mine has been despatched tonight so I'll update when it arrives. It's going back if the radio's in the headphones.
The reason some people are getting a cheaper price for this is **********, but I don't know how that hangs with this forums's affiliate system.
cool - if you could post about the headphone situ that would be tops... ;)
Mines shipped as well

It claims it records voice/FM so I assume that means it's built in FM. However, in my experience, the built in FM tuners on MP3 players are pretty useless.

As long as I can get the Today programme on the bus, I don't care! Also, being able to record MP3 via line in or from the radio is pretty cool, I can get it to record H2G2 for the next morning's commute!

The one on my iriver mp3 player/FM IHP-190 I think is spot on and Ive used it around alot of the UK from Dover upto the Highlands of Scotland and has worked as good as a personal Stereo radio.
This one is only £30 and it is to replace a Sony Sports radio srf-78 which I got for £20 so for £30 should be a bargain.
Mine just arrived about 10 mins ago by 1st class post but it was on a van.Not got time to try it now so will try it in next few days but looks alright for £30.

Not compliant I imagine! You have to go to Dabs from another referrer, so the forum affiliate link would not work.

For me, I simply clicked on the link on the first page. I didn't use any referral link other than the forums one that you posted. Just tried it right now on my home PC though and it came up at the price you said originally, and the 256MB one was a higher price too. Strange. Will have to check work PC for spyware etc.
I had the same thing. Ordered yesterday for the £27.99 (inc vat) price, then a couple of hours later clicked the link again (wanted to check the specs for a guy @ work) and it came up at the more expensive price.
No idea why though.

See this thread: http://www.thedvdforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=323116 if you havn't yet. The price isn't to do with the referer link, seems its based on existing cookies, put in the quicklinx code: 3FKGFC to get the cheaper price.
cheers Crazy Squirrel, and thanks OP, ordered
Well, mine just arrived. Very nice for the money. It's made of grey plastic which is a bit on the cheap-looking side, but the metal buttons and trim offset that. The display is clear and reasonably high res. Backlight is white. The OS seems complicated, haven't got into it yet. Radio reception average but no radio works well in this building. Can record from FM and from Mic. Can only record in WAV, but don't know what sampling frequency etc. Tried playing one file so far, a Moloko track compressed from a 192kb/s MP3 to a 32kb/s WMA. Sounds excellent. Supplied headphones not bad, nice neck-strap, connects to PC via a mini-USB cable. This is a shame, I was hoping for a "thumb drive" thingy.
Overall very pleased.
Just ordered. Cheers to the OP

is there a program that will compress the original mp3 tracks "on the fly" to WMA as they are being copied across to the device?
Media Monkey will do that for you
can this be used as a standard pen drive2?

Yes.
What's the battery life like on these?
Just had a quick play with mine, XP recognised it as a removable drive, just drag and drop . Does exactly what it says on the tin really, the radio (built in) is pretty decent, seems like it uses the headphone cable as the arial so reception depends on where you are. backlight isn't very even but does display a lot of info (volume, battery, radio frequency with frequency bar, file format, playback mode, track number, track time, scrolling id3 tag, and even a spectrum analyser thinggy). It is very light and plasticky but for the price
EDIT: comes with the player, driver (for win98), battery, earphone, and neck band.
Battery life is claimed at approx 14 hrs (according to the manual)

The lower the sample rate the lower the battery life. It's a trade off between the amount of songs you want on there and the time you want your battery to last.

Has anyone tried recording from the radio into memory?
I'm interested in this feature.
I know its WAV only but is the sound OK, or is it really low bitrate?
thanks

Ordered one of these, thanks to OP.
Thanks PATP :-) gone for one of these.
Its says the record bit rate is 8kbps (wav).
Tried playing one file so far, a Moloko track compressed from a 192kb/s MP3 to a 32kb/s WMA. Sounds excellent.
Just been messing about with WMA and quality doesn't seem to match MP3 below 96kb/s

I've settled on 48kb/s WMA as a decent trade off. I'd rather have a decent amount of choice on there at listenable quality than one or two albums at hifi quality.

Only chose standard delivery and recieved mine next day and on a saturday!
Excellent service :)
Sound quality is excellent if using a decent pair of headphones.
radio signal strength isnt the best, but a quality bargain non the less.

Has anyone tried variable bit rate mp3's yet ? For example, ones encoded with lame using --alt-preset standard or --alt-preset extreme.

Thought I would add that mine last for a few days and then died.Ive tried a few different batteries and it wont power back up any longer.Maybe unlucky but waste of money for me.Radio reception was shockingly bad as well and went back to my sony personal radio which had much better reception from same headphones.
