View Full Version : dvd playback interference !!!
Hey there ---- posted on this forum before re: interference on my new 21" 4:3 SONY TV when playing back DVDs.
The interference manifests itself as a fine veneer of wavy lines that are visible over the top of the picture -- it's not disasterous but can be distracting -- it is more visible when certain colours are on the screen i.e blues - greys etc.. and is also visible when the GUE (graphical interface) of the TOSH sd100e is up.
A technician suggested I got a new SCART lead as this was almost certainly picking up the inteference -- I purchased a new 30 quid (irish pounds) SCART with gold plates, oxygen free etc. and this hasn't made any difference.
Any comments?
Have u tried switching off (not standby, physically off) all your other equip except the tv & dvd player?, then if there is no interference, switch each piece of equip on & see which is causing the problem.

thanks Delh - i'll give that a go.

I have a similar problem to this on my 36FS70. I get vertical lines which move from right to left causing a slight change in colour on greys/blues.
I've had two sets now - the second one seems less noticable. I've tried pulling everything away from the set but it makes no difference to the picture...

Are you connecting with RGB (AV1) or s-video ?
I think I saw a similar effect on my sony while I used s-video for the DVD player setup. For playback I use RGB which is purrrrfect.
Maybe s-video is more prone to noise? I dunno.
much as i hat eto admit it, i think this may be an intrinsic problem with my set also -- when i first noticed the problem i actually unplugged the TV / DVD and set it up in another corner of the room away from any noticeable gadgets (stereo, heater, ariel etc.) -- still the same problem... oh well...
one thing i've come to accept with technology (almost) is that it is very rarely perfect and you can drive yourseld mad trying to sort it out -- try pointing out some of the defficiencies that we (the kind of people that post on these forums) see in TVs/Video/Sound etc.. and most people will probably look at you as if you're nuts or say something like "well, I didn't notice it until you said it was there....."

You've hit the nail on the head...
I swapped my first set because in addition to the lines, there were green patches in the corners of the screen (not caused by the speakers). That was a problem I could easily demonstrate to the engineer (from Comet).
To demonstrate the vertical lines problem I'd probably have to put the room in complete darkness, find a suitable frame on a dvd and then say 'if you really concentrate on the picture...'.
And I paid over £2k for the TV... :(
If there is a club for this thing then Id be the Bigest Member.
Got to say Ive taken stuff back more times than cleaning me teeth and they are shiny (see:D )
The first set I had was a Sony KV28FX20 and the problem wiith that was when you were watching films in the dark(which is the best way to watch films) when the screen was blank you could see a white mark in the top left hand side of screen. Especially when you changed the channel. Tried 2 of these and they had the same problem. The shop told me that it was the Trinitron Glass reflecting.:( .
I then had to choose a different TV. Sticking with sony I chose the 24" (Black Version). This did not have the white marks at the top but yet another problem. When the credits were on at the end they were bleeding to the right. Obviously when I saw this I noticed it every damm time I watched a film.
Back it went, On to another Make I thought. I then chose Panasonic which appart from one problem is TIP TOP. It does make a few static noises from the back of the telly which is quite anoying when there is not much sound on. (But I can live with that). I wont even go into the problems I had with DVD.
People call me "MR TAKEITBACK) I can see why...
hey greenstead - i'm using RGB but on AV2 is this wrong? i'll have to try it on AV1 tonight although i'm sure i've done this allready and it makes no difference -- if I select video output on the player the interference dissapears but of course it doesn't look half as sharp as RGB --- i don't have capacity for s-video ------
thanks for the tales of dissapointment from you other guys -- doesn't it seem that the more technology advances the number of annoying problems that appear gets more and more ??? ;)
