View Full Version : Rome Total War is Excellent!
Been playing Rome Total War all weekend and its got to be the best strategy game in ages! Much better than the demo indicated, the pre-battle speeches your generals give are great, lots of variety in them! Siege's are fun, love releasing the war dogs on the enemy. The campaign map is vastly improved over Medieval and Shogun. Very civiliasation like with all the new diplomacy stuff. Can't recommend this game enough, buy it!!

Me too :suspect:
It's been out since the 22nd in the US. I believe its out on Wed here.
its a superb game
"unleash hell" is one of your Generals Lines
Eat your Heart out with the speeches - think of Braveheart.
This game just gets better and better.
The tutorial is ace and the gameplay is awesome
Graphics
10/10

I think the only real annoying thing is having to have a govenor in each city to control building. I made the mistake of sending an army without a general deep into enemy lands, it got bribed and I lost it. Still I managed to put Carthage to the sword and kill the 15,000 inhabitants, was quite easy really.

Gotta love it that it's written and Britain and we get it later

Such is the way of life. Asuming Activision are still the publishers, they're American based so probably had a lot to do with that.
Also - A few more people to buy it out there.....
Don't really understand why we can't have worldwide releases on the same day though...

Mass Market is bigger over there I suppose. Lol I thought it was as the help commentary is in a British Accent.
Farrar - I'm a bit stuck on how you Port Blockade. How do you build or control ships? I Click on on my Ports but nothing happens and the Senate are getting unhappy with me?
TIA

Only encourages mass pricay though, gotta be a bad thing

Anyone know where to find a review ?

Published by Activision though.
The game is amazing, looks stunning and runs very, very well. i've only had a brief go last night but even the sieges on small/weak settlements was great fun
Both www.gamespy.com and www.gamespot.com have a review - 4.5/5 at gamespy; 91 % at gamespot...

You usually start with a couple of ships, if not you have to build a port and then a shipwright (I think) to build them.
You just move one of your ships into the area of the enemy port to blockade it.

Arrgh, can't believe this has snuck out without me knowing! Seen all the talk of it not being out in the UK and forgot to check the US release dates! I'll be heading off to the shop tonight then :)

Is this the one that powered that Time Commanders series that was on tv not so long ago?

That only showed a tiny fraction of what the full game is about though.
I can't find this in any shops, they've not even got it priced on the shelf so it's not like it's sold out :( Is it definitely out in the US?

Yup, it's definetly out in the US. Due out in the UK on the 1st October.
I've never played any of the Total War series.
Am I best picking up Shogun (it's a nice price) or just jumping straight in with Rome TW ?

Jump in the deep end and go with Rome. Under the pretty new graphics, it's pretty much the same game anyway. - This is meant in a good way :)

im gonna give the demo a go.
just had a nice three hour session and it is very nice indeed, got the stupid plague though and that wiped out most of my family, then the gauls attacked and killed another governer. Time to restart I think.

i've not played in a couple days for several things which gave me the hump:
- spent a wad loads of money building up a big army in one of my settlements, just about to move them out then dirty computer sent in the talker guy to make a deal and stole me entire town and army
- massive seige, i cleared the walls (said i cleared them) got men down ready to raid. noticed i left my generals/important guys at the back of the battlefield. moved them in, going under the gate they got killed with fire/stuff they chuck out the little holes as defense. cue me entire army(~2000) fleeing from ~600 and pretty much all dying going out the gate
- another massive battle ~2000 men on each side. took a while to kill them all/get them to run away. just about to take the settlement and time limit expired and i lost, including my entire army in the process somehow
i shall be starting over also :D

I was having some problems with this crashing...and i really cant be bothered to go throught the first two battles in the tutorial agian. Is there anyway to quickly skip through the tutorial, and is there much after the second battle (the siege)?
This game is just totally awesome - the most impressive strategy game I've played in a long time!
Had an insane battle with my best General and strongest army against the Gaul's best man and strongest army - they survived by the skin of their teeth! :D

This is doing my head in as well! I've played halfway through the tutorial four times now and something keeps coming up, so I have to go stop playing, then go back to the start? It goes on for hours it seems - is there at least a way to save the damn thing (my options are greyed out) when you're in the middle of the tutorial if you can't skip it, or do you have to play the whole thing in one sitting?
just start a normal campaign guys, the tutorial is really over after you've taken youre first few towns. I'm sure you could save although i dont think you can mid battle.
I love the campaign in this game, however the battles are too much like shogun and medievil, the words FOG of WAR are not used in this game much, so playing a human online it would be useless taking part of your force around his flank, even though in reality he couldnt see it.
also the battles are too quickly over this game needs a patch where the game can be layed at 1/2 or even quarter speed, pausing just doesnt work best
agree the battles are a bit restricted at about half an hour max, but this is one of the most addictive games I've played in a long time, and I've just taken spain, germaina next.
I'm just having a problem whereby the campaign map is in black and the landscape does not appear. I can see the oceans, and all units appear fine, but the landscape itself does not. Also, the battles themselves run pretty well considering my system.
I've got a Fujitsu Amilo D 7800 laptop, with 768MB RAM and a Radeon Mobility graphics card. I know it's a graphics issue, but I've got the latest drivers from Fujitsu from the graphics card (admittadly nearly a year old). I've tried the Omega Drivers and they cause no end of problems.
If anyone can suggest a solution to my problem I'd be very grateful:)

It only has a intergrated Radeon 9000 chip so you may never get it to work properly.
All I can suggest is in the Video Options inside the game, try lower resolutions and colour depths.
It's a Radeon M6 actually, but I think you might be right about not getting it to work properly. Shame, as the battles work ok
