View Full Version : Akira
I borrowed this over the weekend and although I enjoyed it I was wondering what's the big deal? It isn't any better or worse than any other Anime I've watched in the past which on the whole I tend to find boring and crap. Although Akira appears to have been better animated than most and the story was good, it didn't live up to all the hype surrounding it.
Didn't respond with your email did you? What is it?
Well, TBH, there's possibly an argument that one who 'on the whole finds Anime boring and crap' isn't going to get a huge amount from Akira.
IMHO, its a great film. Evidently not enough to turn someone round from their dislike of the genre, but responsible for converting many a newcomer to the scene.
I got the 2 disc recently, and was very pleased with it both for the quality of its animation and how little its aged. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it. Hey, atleast its not a purchase.

I thought i'd nail my colours firmly to the mast. I think it's because I find the depiction of pre-pubescent schoolgirls in a lot of anime and japanese manga comics quite disturbing. I don't know if infantiphilia is a word because I don't want to use the the term paedaphilia but there does seem to be an unhealthy fascination with young children particularly girls in a lot of anime/manga.

well, alot of such anime portray those 'schoolgirls' as heroines.. there's nothing submissive or infantial about them. Project A-Ko, Bubblegum Crisis, Vampire Hunter D etc all have heroic female leads. So, ok, while they maybe scantily clad.. it's not aimed directly at pervy men in raincoats. If anything it's probably aimed at the same real-life schoolgirls in search of a hero.
some might call it a form of 'girl power'. but i won't.. coz that's just soooo corny now :D

I concur that what you're saying can apply to much animanga, but oddly it was the predominant absence of these elements that raised Akira above the genre for me.
There's not a huge amount more I can say without getting flamed. I should probably leave it at 'its an unfortunate society where inhabitants feel uncomfortable in the portrayal of their youth.'

Talking about youth I just saw Battle Royale on the big screen this we, really great stuff!
As for anime I've never been enthusiastic about them, but it's just a matter of personnal taste, like someone who prefer vanilla to chocolate.

Watched this on 72" screen, and have to admit it is superb, surely one of the pinnacle cell animations of our time. It deserves its accolades, no saucer eyed characters or scantily clad females..just a brilliant anime.

Yes but to paraphrase the stand up comic Jack Dee '...not as lap dancers'.
