View Full Version : missing hard disc space - anything I can do about it?
Hi,
I've got a targa pc with a 200gb hard disc,
but in the my computer bit, it says its only 175gb.
where did the other 25gb go?
and surely i must be able to get some of it back?
any help much appreciated.
cheers.

It'll be down to the different ways of measuring a Gigabyte. HDD manufacturers round the figure to 1000Mb=1Gb, whereas your computer uses 1024Mb=1Gb. Plus you'll lose a bit of space due to formatting and indexes.

If you have a Norton Protected Recycle bin, try emptying the protected files.

175 is pretty low, my 120gb drives read as 111gb in windows.
my guess is that some space is probably being used by a disc image on a hidden partition for restoring the windows install and other programes.
My 160 is reported as 149gb.

As a general rule of thumb, the following drive capacities will give these amounts of space on the drive:
80GB = 74GB
120GB = 111GB
160GB = 153GB
200GB = 189GB
250GB = 233GB
This is dependent upon many factors including manufacturer, disk format used (FAT32 or NTFS) and operating system.
Targa PCs don't have a recovery partition or something do they?
What does disk management say? (control panel - administrative tools - computer management)
