yes... the drives really struggle to play CDR's

CDRW's are much better but even then they are hit and miss depending on which drive you have.

I bought a new XBox the other week (Manufactured Sept 2003 with Philips DVD Drive inside) and it plays CDR and CDRW no problem. Its a lottery regarding which make of DVD Drive you get in your machine.

My Xbox with a Philips drive reads CDR. My first Xbox with a Thomson didn't.

Yeah there are 3 possible drives...

Thomson will not play most CDR's but it will play certain CDRW's and will play most decent DVDR media

Samsung is the best for reading DVDR media and will read certain CDRW but will struggle with alot fo CDR's

Phillips is best for reading CDR/CDRW but the pickiest when it comes to DVDR

Sadly however you will always find exceptions to the above rule... you'll find people swearing their thomson will read anything or their Samsung won't read DVDR's

weird but the above rules are fairly stable... My Thomson certainly adheres to the above.

The Thompson and Philips do, but the Samsung plays all CD-Rs.

Ah but above someone claims that his Philips reads CDR's as well... And I have heard Samsung owners say theirs does not play CDR's

Others have said DVDR playback on Samsung is inferior to Philips and Thomson!

As I say I have read loads of anecdotal evidence all over and I have heard bad and good stories about all three drives...

the consensus is that the best drive is the Samsung and then it is a bunfight between Thomson and Philips...

So the answer is just try some different types of media and see what works :)

The newer Philips drives will play CD-R (except black bottomed stuff), the older ones won't.

Oh, and the Thomson drives suck as they are unreliable pieces of crap. It's generally regarded that the preference is Samsung, Philips then Thomson.

erm except the posters and forums that don't...

including me... my Thomson plays everything except CDR...

it is generally regarded that the Philips has the worst CDRW performance as well...
