Looking at The R2 Project they've got a piece on HKL latest deal and it mentions that HKL have secured the rights to ABT 2 and 3 but it doesn't say anything about ABT 1. Am I missing something here?

Take a look at the Bullets N Babes (http://www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com/index.php) website, for full details of all the titles HKL have recently acquired the rights to. :)

Remember, there are 3 titles which are yet to be annouced.
1 of them could be ABT1, I find it hard to believe HKL would only get parts 2 & 3.

Why? MIA own the rights to ABT, so there is no way at all HKL can have them. Simple as that.

But the next 3 titles have nothing to do with Golden Princess and somebody must own/owned the rights to them in order for HKL to cut a deal anyway.

well thanks for clearing that up:D

Hmm... I didn't know there were more. Can we speculate? Or just plain guess? Keeping it broad...

Knowing their love for Sammo:

Some old-school:
Five Deadly Venoms

And some wire-fu, maybe:
Burning Paradise

Well, we know they're not (according to Jenz) A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled or Drunklen Master 2.

For HKL to get A Better Tomorrow they'd have to sublicense it from MIA which just isn't gonna happen as the two companies are effectively rivals so if MIA did this, they would in effect be admitting they're inferiority....only way HKL will get ABT1 is to wait till MIA loses the rights, even then I would suspect MIA would get 1st choice for renewing those rights.

No,no, you misunderstand. MIA own the UK rights. And MIA aren't going to sublicense them to a rival firm. So HKL can't get them.

The Golden Princess deal was done with the HK company directly, not with UK owners.

Nor will "Fist Of Legend"

4 fabulous films with little or no hope of being given the treatment they deserve in the foreseeable future. A @@@@ing great shame.

When is the earliest possible opportunity for HKL to have a shot at the rights for A Better Tomorrow?

I don't imagine ever, it'd be like Fox selling off Star Wars!

Hasn't Anchor Bay done ABT1? what's that like?

The R2 MIA disk is pretty poor, with a soft, non-anamorphic picture (practically VHS quality  ), burned-in subs, fair amount of print damage and no extras apart from a trailer.

One to avoid I think, although Blockbuster was selling them for £7 or something a while back....

Avoid the R2. The Anchor Bay is a decent effort and there is no chance for ABT 1 to get a better release before the next century...

However, just to be totally sure. Wait a few weeks. I think Jenz @ bulletsnbabesdvds.com has some more titles to announce. It may not be ABT , but if it is I don't want to be saying I told you so.

It'd be nice just to get a version of DM 2, the old VHS release was deleted years ago wasn't it???
One of the most spectacular martial arts films of all time, & it's not even available in the U.K!

I forgot all about the Anchor Bay ABT. I think I'll look at that for the time being.

Both Anchor Bay editions of ABT1 & ABT2 are supposed to be good discs.
I've heard rumours that HKL wont be releasing ABT2 & ABT3 until 2003 so maybe the AB editions are a better option.

can't believe i didn't plug my reviews for ABT1&2 at DVDTimes in my earlier post!!

here are links for my reviews of the AB discs.

A Better Tomorrow (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=161&story=1865)
A Better Tomorrow 2 (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=162&story=1866)

while i didn't do any kind of comparison cos I didnt' have the MIA disc at the time I did own the MIA disc and it is just a joke in comparison to the AB disc - but there is still room for improvement.

I believe that Disney also have rights to City on Fire so there might be hope that HKL will one day get the rights to Fist of Legend!

Rights issues often comes down to country and area.

Disney for example own Fist Of Legend and Drunken Master 2 worldwide. They only own City On Fire in the USA.
