Does anyone know of a single application that performs the task of both SMTP Server, and POP3 Proxy? Preferrably free or cheap, i.e. not Wingate,

Ta,
Ade.

I'l have a look at those, anyone else got any ideas? I find this sort of software rather hit and miss, so I'd like as much choice as possible!

If you're prepared to dabble in Linux there are loads of free choices ;)

In fact most distributions come with them built-in (e.g. Sendmail as the SMTP server, and usually some form of POP3 and often IMAP servers).

You can use Sendmail on Windows too, but it's not an easy thing to configure (very powerful though and runs the vast majority of the worlds email servers). It's easier to configure on Linux if you use a web admin tool such as Webmin.

I use Fedora Core 2 and pretty much everything built in to run my mail server (Sendmail) and IMAP server (dovecot I think it's called but it comes with another one too, plus POP3). I much prefer IMAP to POP3 as it's more like Exchange server (simplistic by comparison, but it has folders etc). It also comes with Squirrelmail which serves as my webmail client.

This is only a stopgap really, I'm having to share an AOL connection which is murder, but as soon as me and the other half can afford our own house it'll be a thing of the past!

Threadkiller - I'll have a look at that over the weekend, Ta very much!

DeadKenny - I have no problem with a little Penguin Love, but as you can see, with AOL, it's not much of an option :(
