View Full Version : is there a DVD player that can do this..?
are there any that can take a 4:3 picture and make it 'anamorphic' by adding black bars on the left and right? like how the BBC broadcast with digital.. this would be really useful for me cause my TV won't go to 4:3 mode with RGB for some reason :(

Panasonic?
This would be quite useful, cause it annoys me as well, but the only 4:3 stuff I have is Buffy and Dilbert box sets so I can live with it.

S-video for me too. RGB's too bloody dark also.
My Hitachi won’t go into 4:3 when I watch DVD’s in RGB either. Does anyone know why this is, as it seems to affect all brands of T.V’s. By the way, if I set my player to SVHS, it will auto-switch to 4:3 just fine, but RGB does give me a noticeably better picture.

This may be to do with default settings. My Phillips's default is 4:3 and being relatively cheap, this cannot be changed via hidden menus etc. Therefore (I watch DVD and ITVDigital in RGB) it is 4:3 unless told by the source to switch to another format. Consequently I don't have the problem described above.

Yes but when I watch 4:3 films in RGB in my TV, the picture is always stretched to fill the screen, no matter what picture format I pick.
do you mean 14:9 ( i think thats the aspect ratio i am talking about, i'll check tonight)? that has black bars at the side of it, and at the top, and is also the format that BBC etc broadcasts their widescreen films at.

I think Toot is using 'anamorphic' to mean widescreen.
My TV will always put an RGB image in widescreen.
Some digital channels broadcast 4:3 as a 16:9 image (Carlton Cinema and some of the BBC channels so they have black bars, or colour bars for sport usually). This keeps the picture in the right ratio (4:3) even though it is technically a 16:9 picture (cos the bars are part of the transmission).
On DVD, I put on Buffy but can't watch it in 4:3 through RGB. I have to put it back in composite. So, wouldn't it be nice if the dvd could put the picture as a 4:3 image within a 16:9 'transmission' so black bars at the side were treated as part of the picture.

Yes, this is exactly the problem I have. If I want to watch Buffy I have to change my DVD setting to SVHS, to watch it in 4:3 and not stretched. The problem is, my player is plugged into Scart 1 RGB, but to get SVHS, I have to change it to Scart 2. This is a bit of a hassle, seeing as I don't have very many 4:3 discs. I must admit, I hadn't thought of switching to composite, I think that would work through Scart 1,so I wouldn't need to switch the cable. Composite's not the best picture quality format to watch 4:3 discs in though, especially as these disc's are normally T.V programs and badly encoded in the first place.

You guys must have sh!te TVs.
My daughter is currently watching Dumbo, so I've just set the TV to 4:3 mode and it seems fine. Connected thru RGB as well.
