I was briefly in the Dixons at Bluewater, Dartford area, on Thursday and noticed they had 2 models of DVD recorder.
One was £999 and claimed to allow you to record to DVD R/W in real time and allow you to start to watch a program from the begining while it was still recording, like TIVO. It didn't mention recording times or say if it was capable of being played back on a 'normal' DVD player. I think it was a Pioneer or Panasonic, but can't remember exactly.
The second was a Philips and cost £1299. It claimed to record to DVD+ and explicitly stated you could play back the recording on a domestic DVD player. Again no mention of capacities, etc.
Both units were the same width as normal DVD/VCR, etc components, except they were taller, closer to VCR hight, if not slightly taller.
I'm sure there will more models about soon, and given time, the prices should drop. It will be interesting to check out the DVD magazines to see if any of them have reviews.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes
