The rights for away games have to be bought from the FA of the host nation - Sky have a deal with the company who sells these rights on behalf of most of the smaller/Eastern European nations but also have the money to buy the rights from other FAs which aren't included in the deal (like with the Turkey away game last year) so invariably end up with most Away games if they want them (the BBC did get a couple of England's Euro 2004 Away Qualifiers but they were against the likes of Macedonia).
All of Englands competitive home games must be shown on terrestrial TV but before the current contract the rights to friendlies were owned by Sky.

It's not a case of they all must be shown on terrestrial TV - it's just that the BBC now have the rights.
The only 'listed' events are the World Cup/Euro Finals and 'decisive' qualifiying games.

but why aren't there even ANY highlights on terrestial tv? it friggin' stinks! mind you untill the FA get the balls to sack that EDITED erickson, it's pointless watching england as he is intent on sabotaging the team at every turn.

But Englands qualifiers have never been on normal TV anyways. Unless its a very important game like when we played Sweden complete with Terry Butchers sore head.
This is probably the reason why i couldnt give a flying fudge of Englands qualifiers. Prefer the actual tournmanent.
I think the issue here is the complete lack of highlights.
Live games I've lived without for quite a bit - but not often we don't get highlights.

Sunday 05/09/2004 17:30 - 18:10 BBC2 'Sport+: Grandstand'. The program description on my Freeview EPG says 'A look at all the stories making the back pages this week, including England's World Cup qualifier against Austria and the British successes at the Athens Olympics.'
I don't know whether this will have any highlights or just be a studio discussion of the match, but it appears to be the only coverage of the game on the BBC.

having watched iit live, maybe not ...
They didn't even show any highlights on bbc2 today?
Is there something stopping the bcc even showing highlights of the games now?

NO matter.
I've managed to obtain the full game (albeit from the Hong Kong TV network). Watching it now.

I read last week that the BBC hadn't bothered buying the rights to show the highlights and that ITV had used up all of its football budget.

Once again James has buggered it up. Iv said it before and i'l say it again. This man is not good enough for the football league let only England!
Presumably it's the same arrangement with the Poland game tonight with no TV highlights??
Yep - nothing listed on terrestrial.

I was in some crappy pub in Reading a few yaers ago and they turned all the music off because the locals wanted to watch Temple Of Doom!
Apparently Sky used their own camera's for the Austria match. So one has to wonder why there was no widescreen feed!

ahhh, so thats why there was no highlights on BBC for the England vs Austria Game, I was away that weekend, but thought to myself, there is bound to be highlights on BBC so will watch them in my Hotel, but all I got was some crappy Test The Nation Music Test, I was well disapointed and as of today, I still havent seen any england highlights of that game :(
Dunno why they cant get highlights at least, Its really dumb, I'm sure its been done before in the past, Have BBC stopped it now???
Rights packages tend to be renewed/negotiated, etc, so I dunno if there has been no terrestrial rights determined for England's away games for this season or summat...
Dunno - it's very odd not to mention frustrating. Still, I believe all England's home matches are live on the good 'ol Beeb!
