I'm not really sure what 'Bit-setting' does, I *think* it flags your +/-R disc as a 'DVD-ROM', so in theory, it should work better in, say, an X-Box. Although mine has been happy up to now without this.

More useful though is the removal of the regional protection, enabling you to play discs from any region should you be using your PC as a DVD player.

The other thing, is the removal of the so-called 'rip-lock' - this will enable you to do very naughty things with CD's and DVD's MUCH faster than with a standard drive, as the disc will be accessed at full speed, rather than throttled to 1x or 2x speed reading.

Not that I'd ever condone such things :nono: :D

Bit-setting makes the disc more compatible with 'any' DVD drive, inc. games consoles etc.

What is the point in "changing" a DVD+R disk to a DVD-ROM disk?

Will the disk be more compatible with other dvd players or something like that?

jpearn
05-09-2004, 04:41
Yes, makes it readable by any DVD drive, opposed to just a specific DVD manufacturer, or console manu. or PC DVD.
If you have an old type firmware on your drive (PC etc or old DVD player) the booktype isn't readable, so put it as a normal DVD-ROM and you can read them etc.

Sounds like I'm wittering, but it is an advantage :)

Jason.

This explains all:

http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0&sid=2&aid=42
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150

Basically it will make your DVD+R and DVD+RWs more compatible. It is entirely irrelevant to DVD-R/-RW.

What a sickner. I have just bought this drive last week from SVP Communications when it was 50 odd quid, but very happy with the drive never the less. You can't win them all.

You think that's bad.
Some months ago I bought a then (just come out) DVD ReWriter
8x DVD+r 4x DVD-4 for £99 at the computer fair.

Now it's on sale at less than £50 and I've hardly ever used it.

I'm still using the Pioneer 104 I bought two years ago and don't see why I should buy a replacement until it stops working.

Why do you change burners so often?

The first burner just went 'BING' one day and never worked again - it was less than six months old.

My second, despite claiming to be a 8x burner, will only burn +R at this speed, although I'm yet to encounter a disc it will burn faster than 4x. Currently, I've got a large pile of 4x +R discs it will only burn at 1x. Which is half the minimum possible speed the +r format supports. So it's not a very good writer, although it's an excellent reader, and will be replacing my dying DVD-ROM drive.

Plus - it's new, it's shiny - isn't that reason enough? :D

xxxx
05-09-2004, 14:40
Well, my Pioneer 104 is still burning DVD-Rs at 2x speed and can't burn DVD+Rs at all. I won't change it till it breaks. I'm in no hurry for disks to be burnt.

From what I've read so far the dual-layer media is just fine, so nothing to worry about (just use bit-setting to increase player compatability).

At some point, but who knows (hint: nobody). It's fallen dramatically in price though (faster than I thought it would) since it's introduction:

June/July - £15 a disc
Now - as low as £4 a disc

(now just waiting for it to hit £2 a disc before I personally get any)

Yes, and not known yet.

'Apparently' (according to Benq announcement a few months ago) 6x to 8x DL writers are scheduled for first-quarter 2005, but beyond that no plans have yet been announced. (That said, 4x DL was introduced by Pioneer & NEC before Benq had reckoned it would get to market).

If I had to guess, I would think retail will be £1.99 within 8 weeks.

With the speed and accuracy of the NEC writer, I think it warrants the £50 price tag without any DL compatibility....just take that as a bonus!!

Which is what I have done.Im not thinking of using the Dual Layer but replacing a liteon 4012 with the 3500 because of its speed on cdr's/cdrw's and dvd's and it has dual layer if I use it in the future. For £49.99 its a bargain even without DL but included its a steal.

When you burn a Dual Layer disc from now onwards it's booktype will be set to 'DVD-ROM'. Can be checked with DVDInfoPro or Nero. Compatability with settop DVD players and computer DVD-ROM drives should now be improved.

Having had an NEC ND1100, ND1300 and ND2510 I just 'upgraded' to a ND3500. All I get is 'power calibration failed' when trying to write a disc. The same disks all work OK with the other drives so either it's faulty or the discs are incompatible. A trawl on the internet results in posts that these 3500s are very 'picky' on disks and the NEC site shows a very short compatibility list  much shorter than for the 2510.
I've never had a problem with any disk before.
Beware.

I've got one - and its very reliable at burning disks (I burn at 4x using datawrite grey, £5.99 at svp).

However one major gripe is that this drive seems very slow at ripping dvds. It takes up to 40 minutes to rip a dvd to my hard drive. My old Pioneer dvdrom drive used to do it in about 20 minutes. I've flashed my drive to make it all region etc - made no difference.

All new drives are locked to 1x speed for ripping, anti piracy thing, it's set somewhere in the firmware.
