On dabs.com. Can't find this cheaper anywhere else. Even the W1 is listed as more expensive on the website. Not sure how long this price will stay though..

Dabs (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=14532&a=60823&g=86005)
( quicklinx=345B ) - £232.99 inc p&p (not in stock)

Jessops won't price match this sadly. The cheapest they could go was £265? Thats even after they speak to their head office.. grrr..

Just ordered one.. hope it arrives soon :)

~Edit~
Amazon UK does it for £229.99 now and in stock..

Opps, sorry Trekker.. completely forgotten abt it ;)

Frustin - I don't feel safe buying it from Pixmania.. you might get a foreign language manual, no manual, etc.. and it doesn't state that it comes with the extra case and batteries too.. And its £237 + £9 delivery..

sorry, derekng, i think you are missing my point. what i meant was; i think the price drop is across the board.

I have been looking at this camera too, as an alternative to the Canon Ixus 410/500.

Dabs (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=14532&a=60823&g=86005) are only £17 cheaper than Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/redirect-home?tag=thedvdforums-21), which would still be my choice for spending this amount of money.

Do dabs charge for delivery?

Anyway I didn't say it was a bargain.. just that its the cheapest thus far.. I was checking the prices a week ago and they were all £250+ inc dabs. So even after prices been reduced, dabs still the cheapest :P

Psybear - £232 by dabs do include delivery :) Its £226 + postage.. Amazon shows it out of stock with a 1-2 weeks wait..

Yeah but going by recent threads, you are more than likely to get hit by HMCE ordering from 7 Day Shop. Not worth the risk for a fiver!

Hadn't noticed the 1-2 wait message. :(

Had another look at Dabs.com (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=14532&a=60823&g=86005). Now I remember why I don't like them, they are one of those companies who indulge in geographical discrimination. They are looking an extra £5 to post it to me in N Ireland, bringing the price up to £238. Still tempted though...

No you're not - they pay the VAT for you. Since early August, IIRC.

I see Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002DCK44/thedvdforums-21) have now dropped the price to £229.99! Still quoting the 1-2 week waiting time, but a good deal.

They are quoting the same price for the silver version, the DSC-W1S, but it comes without the leather carry case and the better batteries.

Some bad reviews though on Amazon US (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforums-20) site.

Correct  Now says so on website for each product.

Mind you I think I would rather have the Canon. My daughter bought a 2meg Sony Cybershot camera recently and my Canon A60 wees all over it for picture quality :notworthy

How does this camera compare with the DSC-P120 (or p100)?

I have been able to compare my DSC-W1 with my sisters DSC-P9, and I feel it is better (not that you would notice much on a standard 6x4 print though).
The P100 is deemed to be the same camera bar the different body and lcd screen size.
If you check "dpreview" you will see the debate rage on as to whether the SONY W1 is good or rubbish, it seems to polarise opinion! Best answer, try it and see if u like it.

And what do you think? And (apart from your sister's camera) what are comparing with?

Personally I have owned 3 Kodaks, upgrading each time for more megapixels. Sold my last 3.2MP Kodak when I had the opportunity to get a new Konica 4MP model at an excellent price. Having lived with it for a while, I just don't like the controls and menus on the camera and have been very disappointed with the quality of indoor pics (something that my last Kodak was excellent at).

Currently agonising between the Sony W1/W12 (seems a bit on the large/heavy side), the Coolpix 5200 (lovely feel to it but very small LCD) and the Canon Ixus 500 (most expensive, smaller screen than Sony, not as a grip as the Coopix).

So your opinions of the Sony would be appreciated.

I like my W12 :)

Its not too big and not too heavy.. when I saw it in shops it looked 'big' but after opening the box, I went 'hey, this isn't that big'..

Not really had a chance to try the picture taking but seems good IMO :)

Does the leather case come with a velcro or other fastener for attaching to a belt?

Had a Sony DSC W1 from Empire Direct, love the screen, love the scene modes, love the 640 x 480 film mode, loved the feel of the camera in the hand...despised the aggressive noise reduction it employs and gives each picture a soft feel. Was really upset about returning it but the pic's are the most important thing and I thought that the results from Canon A60 (cheers bargain forum) last year were much sharper. I just prefer the sharper look, others may prefer a softer finish. Got an Ixus 500 after this for a couple of weeks , sold it as I didn't take it everywhere with me as I thought I might and am now as a happy as a bag of happy things feeling really happy with my Canon A95. It just feels right (like my old A60), proper batteries, 1.8" swivel screen, 5MP, a great "auto" mode & oodles of manual features for when the creative juices get to flow!!...Good luck  ...Flyer...

It comes with a fixed belt loop and the front cover uses velcro..

Dixons online are selling the W1 for £230 plus £5 Postage.I used the dixons promotional 'Olympics' discount to get £15 off items over £150, so total £220
Or you could buy something for £20 to make the total order £250 and get £25 off
This is my third purchase of the W1 though-the first two developed faults within a coupla weeks of use-I am hoping it was a bad batch from John Lewis so have tried a different (cheaper)supplier-jsut hope its 3rd time lucky and that Dixons do not cock up the order!!

cheers

Sorry for the delay in replying Psybear.
I liked the Canon S500, pics seem sharper but to me harder than the Sony.
I prefer the Sony screen, manual options, and features like standard AA batteries (a far cry from paying £70 for a spare battery for my FUJI F700 when it was new!).
The worst part of the Sony to me is a fair amount of red-eye in pics, something my old Fuji didnt suffer from.
