View Full Version : Scrubs: Season 4

There was a thread for season 3, so I thought I'd start one for the new season.

Heather Graham is guesting for 8 eps (including the season opener) and Julianna Margulies (ex-ER) is apparently guesting as an attourney at some point.

Kicks off tonight (31st August) with "My Old Friend's New Friend". Will be interesting to see what's happened as a few things were left hanging at the end of S3.

Programme description:

HEATHER GRAHAM GUEST STARS AS NEW PSYCHIATRIST AT SACRED HEART AND ELLIOT FEELS LEFT OUT OF THE GROUP AFTER HER BREAK-UP WITH J.D. -- It's J.D.'s (Zach Braff) last week as a resident as he tries to smooth over his relationship with Elliot (Sarah Chalke) after their break-up. The former couple squabble over having to share time with newlyweds Turk (Donald Faison) and Carla (Judy Reyes), who have their own issues when Carla starts to change everything about her new hubby. Professional yet quirky new psychiatrist Dr. Molly Clock (guest star Heather Graham) starts her first day at Sacred Heart turning heads and forging new relationships with the staff. She befriends a lonely Elliot and tries her best to help J.D. and Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) with a patient offering profound and helpful insight. Meanwhile, when Turk's car blows up, Carla lets him pick out the new ride only to find that instead of a car, he buys a Vespa scooter further proving Carla's point that she needs to always be in control. Neil Flynn and Ken Jenkins also star.

Yay!

Scrubs has always been the best current US sitcom. I have high hopes for season 4.

Now.....if only they would get their fingers out and release some DVD's!

Season 2 started on Wednesday I believe on C4. Beware that C4 appear to be only showing selected episodes (a few episodes are too raunchy for the kiddies obviously) and the ones you are seeing have been cut in places :(

I wish they're release this on DVD - it seriously is the best US comedy around at the moment, a nice change from the canned-laughter studio rubbish we usually see.

The season opener was excellent. I was a bit apprehensive about bringing in Heather Graham and adding a new character but she pulled it off and her character is really good. Ill be watching this weekly.

Just found his blog (http://gardenstate.typepad.com/) and it's a good read and he's quite funny too.

There is a quote from his blog that might be worth repeating in this thread:

No, not that. THE SCRUBS DVD?????? When is the Scrubs DVD coming out?

The answer... please spread the word and tell anyone who cares... is that Touchstone TV wants to wait until they sell the syndication rights to the show before they release the DVDs. As soon as that happens they will come out. Hopefully that will happen this season. Thanks for being patient.

Apparently C4 have the rights, but no plans to show it yet. Although one hopeful idea is that they might show it once they get through showing S2 in the mornings, or when they realise how dire Green Wing is and shelve it, whichever comes first.

Look forward to watching it. I've been rewatching seasons 1 & 2 a lot recently. I have to say that the Scrubs really is the best comedy show on at the moment. The way they can take a common sitcom theme and twist it is fantastic (eg in My bed banter and beyonf in S1 with The whole psychiatry video that runs along J.D. and Eliot's failed relationship) and the Christmas episode in S1 with the great soul song over the ending montage. I have to say my favourite episode ever is My lucky night from S3 which featured J.D.'s cunning plan to split up Eliot and Sean by means of full strength cola - exactly the kind of petty thing I'd think of.

I was actually thinking back and it seems that because J.D. narrates the whole story (almost) we only see things from his perspective: I think the fact is that Eliot has really liked J.D. since the first episode. The clues are there:
The fact that she offers to kiss him in episode s01e03, when they do get together (briefly in S1), she tried to back out with the dreaded "I think we should just be friends" line before admitting she really liked him. Then in the season 2 episode "My sex buddy" she basically says the same thing, but this time J.D. doesn't take the hint so they both want to be with each other, but can't admit it. Finally that she dumps Shaun (after a 4-5 month long distance relationship) just because J.D. finally tells her how he feels says that she is in love with him. Altogether very clever how they manipulate the viewer by using J.D. as the narrator.

I'd love to see a remake of Scrubs with different characters narrating (a la "His/Her story")

The new episode is pretty good, but not "funniest scrubs ever" - Definately keeps up with the rest of S4 though. I think this is probably the strongest season so far, which is pretty decent as Scrubs can get flak for being "samey", and it just goes to show that 4 seasons in it's still as fresh as ever.

i thought it was an excellent episode! What other tv show can mix both sadness and humour in such a perfect way? It reminded me of episode 15 in series 3 called My Screw Up.

The one where Brendan Fraser plays Ben, Jordans brother, Dr.Cox's best friend. We are lead to believe that JD's "screw up" caused Mr. Taylor to die when in fact it was Ben who died after which Cox was the only one who could see him.

I was *so* happy with Episode 9, i was getting really annoyed with the 'making Doug really stupid' storyline. In the other series he was just made out to be nervous, not stupid. So clearing that up was excellent. The new girl was mighty fine, but the episode really lacked a couple things. There weren't enough Perry rants, not much Elliot and a serious lacked the Todd this season. But i do think its been the best episode since My Cake.

That's why I like Scrubs; they have so many great characters that they can skip out a few each episode and it doesn't matter - and when they turn up in later episodes they're all the more welcome.

I'm pleased Doug has a proper 'calling' in life now... :D

A UNICORN FOR A KIDNEY--MATTHEW PERRY AND HIS FATHER JOHN BENNETT PERRY GUEST STAR -- When one of J.D.'s (Zach Braff) favorite patients Harrison Marks (guest star John Bennett Perry) is in dire need of a kidney transplant, J.D. takes matters into his own hands by finding his long-lost son Murray (guest star Matthew Perry) in hopes that he'll donate his kidney. Despite Dr. Cox's (John C. McGinley) warning to J.D. interfere with family business, J.D. persists and complications arise. Meanwhile, Elliot (Sarah Chalke) is fed-up with co-workers not taking her seriously, and discovers she can get her way by flaunting her femininity with some help from Carla (Judy Reyes) and Jordan (guest star Christa Miller). I thought 4x10 was the best episode I've seen for quite some time :)

HaloMan
17-11-2004, 21:30
I thought the exact opposite - I thought 4x10 was awful and was the weakest episode in a long while (since the middle of S3).

They've ruined the character of Jordan (she used to be a bitch), they are starting to make Dr. Cox TOO pleasant, and it just didn't seem to be as... well... balanced as a regular Scrubs episode.

Sounds like 4x11 is a return back to form though - sound like it might have a sad ending (which is a unique thing that Scrubs has which few other sitcoms can pull off). Sounds like the non-bitch Jordan is staying for good though... bah.

kiran_mk2
17-11-2004, 22:51
It sort of feels like they are almost scared that they won't be renewed so are making preparations to finish the show - Jordan becomming vaguely normal, Elliot become a confident doctor, Dr Cox taking more and more positive steps in his life. Hope they get back on track soon.

I thought this one was a little sub-par, the highlight was Ted sweating and head-butting the desk. But a sub-par Scrubs still eclipses the rest of other current comedy shows by a long long way.

Still not liking nice Jordan.

CameronHunter
25-11-2004, 00:56
Still not liking nice Jordan.Yeah, 'nice Jordan' isn't sitting so well with me, offering to help is just waaaay below her! I'm glad to see that Cox is back to the name calling after a few episodes of none at all. But, is it just me or have they decided that The Janitor is no longer married? In series 3(?) the Janitor referred to his wife only having one index finger on her right hand and thumb pinky on the other (the episode with the shorts). He also referred to his 8 year old son when JD caught him sneaking off work early to see his school play. So is it not a bit of a continuation error to have The Janitor running to the jewelers to buy Elliot an engagement ring??

But apart from that, i thought it was a fairly good episode, Matthew Perry did alright i suppose, i just didn't really connect with the character at all, it may have been better if it was drawn out over two episodes.

JD: "It was an oddly large explosion!" --excellent!

JayX
25-11-2004, 18:14
NEVER trust the janitor! everything he says is designed to confuse and upset JD. also, remember the kid he pretended was his son, wasn't.. so maybe he had no son. maybe he has no wife.

Another fantastic episode, and a couple loose ends tied up too. I loved the Dr.Cox helping JD not because JD needed it, but because Cox did was good to hear outloud. It was an allround nice wee episode, although Cox still needs new girls names.

The music when the boy held out his tiny hand was fantastic!

I thought the episode was really, really exceptionally good.

Seriously,
it shone at what Scrubs does best - a few good laughs, a nice complete story with the moral, some heart-tugging and something that involved all the characters. Scrubs has got plenty of life in it yet

I loved the Dr.Cox helping JD not because JD needed it, but because Cox did was good to hear outloud.
I thought it was implied throughout the series that JD was a good doctor... Maybe a few people didn't "get" it so they wanted to spell it out.

CameronHunter
09-12-2004, 14:51
Yeah, it was obvious that JD has always been a good doctor. If you compare it to every other tv show, these guys aren't thick, they are doctors, they aren't stupid comedy doctors either, they are some of the best. Turk being the fastest at the operation wich i can't remember the name of (abdomdectomy??), in series 3 JD was always studying to work out what was wrong with people, and Elliot always knew the answers to Kelso's questions on the rounds back in series 2.

I think thats why Doug never really fitted into the whole thing in season 4 cause they made him out to be stupid, whereas in the other seasons he was just nervous. Talking about Doug, have they got rid of him now?? Good to see The Todd back, is he busy with other projects or something? Cause he only seems to appear every other episode.

"Miracle high five" --excellent

I dunno, i thought it was a fairly poor episode again! Colin Farrel wasn't *that* funny. Perhaps its cause i'm Irish, but either way, was pretty poor!

By the way, I've been watchin a load of Smallville and watched an episode in series 2 which had the Janitor in it...i just can't take him seriously!

To be honest I can't understand how someone who likes Scrubs can think the episode was rubbish, it seemed the same as a normal episode to me?

:dork:

Lets take a typical episode of Scrubs:
* Introduction joke haven't no relevance to rest of episode
* J.D. having problem
* Turk/Elliot having problem
* A recurring character has a problem
* Usually Dr. Cox fixes J.D.'s problem
* Other character's get problems fixed through various ways
* All the substories come together in a moral at the end.

Of course, this is a generalisation - some episodes do differ. This episode was not like the above - J.D. didn't have a problem, the problems were hardly combined and the Elliot and Dr. Cox/Janitor plotlines had very little focus. I also might have imagined it, but there was also a relative lack of voiceover too.

Usually Scrubs relies on odd flashbacks and set-pieces to create humour and not cringe-worthy moments - indeed, Scrubs has never "done" cringeworthy before, even with the Carla/Turk thing, the Elliot/J.D. thing etc. Maybe the network is trying to push Scrubs in a different direction to catch more of a Friends type audience to improve ratings, and IMO it failed.

Again, :dork:. I might be wrong, but there was definitely something that made the episode "feel" wrong.

I thought that 'My Quarantine' was fantastic! Cox back on form, JD's purple suit making an appearance, Tara Reid back and looking as fit as ever, and some classic Janitor!!

It's exactly how an episode of scrubs should be!! All of JDs thoughts about Lonnie's moustache, and Doug made a classic appearance with Ted!

Next weeks episode of Scrubs was filmed in front of a live studio audience...i don't know how exactly that's going to work with the camera pans that they frequently use, but knowing the Scrubs crew, i'm sure they can pull it off! Also according to Zach Braff on his Garden State blog, he is directing another episode!

Cox: ".....and four useless sergeons"

Cox: "You see you're both so useless i felt forced to count you both twice"

Seriously? I haven't laughed once when watching Committed, honestly. I just sit there stoney faced, every so often muttering "please don't say it, please don't say it" just before they make a ludicrously unoriginal and obvious "funny" that is desperately trying to ape Friends. It's comedy by numbers from the ladybird book of how to make a US network sitcom.
This latest episode of Scrubs, whilst it wasn't really its intention (I don't think) really showed how sitcoms like Committed pale in comparison to the Scrubs of the world.

yes, worlds most giant doctor is excellent. and i think the sitcom bit well and truly proved that scrubs is head and shoulders (quite literally in the case of most giant doctor!) above the standard US generic sitcom. did it last too long? probably, and thats also why it worked so well. when reality snaps back in you'd slightly become used to the surroundings that if had only lasted 2 or 3 mins would've felt like a normal scrubs-ism, it made the turn hit you a lot harder that way. they took it to another level and beyond with that bit, and i think showing up the rest of commercial american tv was well and truly its point, whilst also doing the self referencing gags that helped make the simpsons the standard for intelligent animation.

Was there a break this week? nbc.com/scrubs just has this:

HER STORY
9pm 2005-03-15

ELLIOT ALIGNS HERSELF WITH NEW FRIEND DR. CLOCK; HEATHER GRAHAM GUEST STARS -- When J.D. decides to use a tape recorder to gather his thoughts, the voice-overs transfer to Elliot (Sarah Chalke), who makes new friends with Molly (Heather Graham) and gets the courage to tell-off her foil Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley). However, Eliot soon realizes that Molly is not quite the person she thought she was when her felon boyfriend is admitted to the hospital after stealing a car and crashing it into a telephone pole. Meanwhile, in the world of the newlyweds, Turk (Donald Faison) is constantly waking up Carla (Judy Reyes) when he goes to bed; and J.D. has concerns that Dr. Cox may have ruined his credibility with the new residents. Ken Jenkins and Neil Flynn also star.

Yep - most US shows go on a break around this time.

This would explain the lack of a new episode this week too:

"Question: So, Scrubs has what, three new episodes left to air this season? Do you think NBC will finish the season early or do we have to wait until the end of April to see them? — Ryan

Ausiello: Actually, NBC ordered 25 Scrubs episodes — three more than the industry standard. As a result, there are six more episodes to go, not three. As far as the timetable goes, the season finale airs May 17, which means we'll have to sit through several weeks of repeats before we get to the first of the six new ones. And contrary to rumors, NBC did not extend the show's season to give producers time to write a series finale. Scrubs will be back next fall."

(from tvtome scrubs forum)

With that, I presume we'll be waiting till 12th April before we get any new eps. The May 17th date also ties in with the R1 DVD release of series 1.

Another new one tonight as well:

(MAJOR spoilers!)

MY LIPS ARE SEALED
9pm 2005-04-05 ALL NEW!

J.D.'s EFFORTS TO HELP CARLA AND TURK LEARN TO TRUST EACH OTHER AGAIN BACKFIRE WHEN HE AND CARLA KISS - At his best friend's request, J.D. (Zach Braff) agrees to take Carla out to convince her that Turk is trustworthy and that she should move back home. What starts out as a friendly drink takes a turn into unknown territory when J.D and Carla take things a little too far and share a "friendly" kiss, something they both decide that Turk does not need to know about. At the hospital, Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) struggle to maintain their professionalism when faced with a young patient who is suffering from complications after experimenting with erectile dysfunction pills. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) tries to find the balance between being an over-protective father while still trying to be the cool dad after his son falls off the jungle gym. Neil Flynn also stars.

Watched it this afternoon. Not sure why, but it didn't grab me as much as recent ones have. The Dr Cox vs the Janitor bits were enjoyable, but the rest left me slightly cold. Still very good, but just not quite as good as it has been recently.

I'd agree with that. Good but not great.

The janitor doesnt seem to be picking on JD that much anymore :suspect:

Yes, definitely a filler episode.

I agree it was a filler, but it still had a number of LOL moments and the quality is above almost everything else on TV

Janitor vs Dr Cox was already done so I wasn't that enthusiatic.. but it was fairly fun still. Overall the episode was fine, its just the end was so generic for scrubs. Any other show, it'd be great.. but who honestly didn't see that happening in the very last second? Very poor! No innovation whatsoever :(

Still, head and shoulders above everything else ever.

A good episode last nite, much better than the 'filler' epiosdes of late. The Turner and Hooch bits were just brilliant.

Nurse: "The patients not even here yet."
Todd: "I know"

"That girls kind cute! whats her story?"
JD: " She's a dude!"

Very good episode. This has been one of the best seasons of scrubs. It had a bit of a dip in quality 5 or so episodes back but its been awesome recently.

Well, 424 has been aired, and to be honest, it was a litle dull - the pacing seemed quite slow even though the underlying story was still up to standard. Still good, but 7/10 for this one from me.

I thought it was 'standard' Scrubs - the Cox story was quite funny and there was a return of Doug after a few weeks missing.

Was that the season finale?

Nope, there's 25 eps in this series. Finale "My Changing Ways" airs on 10th May.

Really, really good episode. Scrubs at it's best. t

Major spoilers below:
They've seriously played with the story arc of the show quite seriously. Quite weird to see Elliot leave - I hope she'll return to the hospital taking a high ranking job in a season or so.

NBC announced it's fall schedule today and Scrubs isn't on it, instead it's being replaced with "My Name Is Earl" and will return at "some point next season".
