It's limited to certain areas of the country though, as their provision is through the NTLFreedom service.
I have broadband through another supplier, yet the Tesco signup checker says my exchange isn't broadband enabled!
OMG!! Wonder if they have an unlimited 1 meg package?
Calls to technical support aren't cheap though!
Technical Support:
0906 301 8000* support@tesco.net
* calls will be charged at 50p per min
Had a quick look and at the FAQ section and they state that there is no minimum subscription period. So it looks like unlimited 512mb access for £19.97, with no 12 month tie in.

I love the "Help Me Decide" survery.
You put in any old gumph and it say "beedlybeedly beedly --- we think TESCO broadband would be right for you! Bing Bing!".
That is all.

From here. (http://www.tesco.net/legals/broadband_terms.html)
This agreement has an initial term of 12 months. If you wish to cancel the Service during the initial term you must pay a cancellation charge of £70.

The first 30 days of support calls are free - I remember reading it somewhere onthe site.
freedom server yay!! LOL touch barge poll wouldnt with a! ;D
correct. i just phoned and they say it is a 12 month contract.
Cheapest unlimited 512k ADSL available, we'll see soon if the service is up to scratch. But I'd be suprised if it wasn't since its Tesco.

I found this one:

anyone tried them or know if they're any good?
Think Fasthosts charge a setup fee though.
Has anyone used Dialstart?

Agreed, I can't see Tesco risking putting out a sub-standard service for long.

I haven't used them but Dialstart are a BrightView ISP (http://www.brightview.com/our_isps/index.html).
You will probably recognise the names of some of the other ISP's they own/run

The service is provided by NTL which is hardly encouraging in view of the cockup they make of their own servers/proxies/email - with cusomers such as myself without service for a couple of weeks. The site is very poor - How very unprofessional. Of course there is NO migration as it's a Datastream product. if compared with a super provider such as www.plusnet.co.uk.I am still on their £18.99 -they have since withdrawn this deal except for them as what are on it -(no peer to peer or newsgroups but uncapped) which is great
Anyone going for the el cheapos such as Gio ( isn't it luvelly they want their subscribers to coff up another installation fee for their NEW offering) et al are people who enjoy the sensation of shooting themselves in the foot - or so its proven up until now!
OH! It's datastream another reason to avoid -though from reading inputs from them as has it or trying too, its certainly one to avoid like the plague
I'm with Tesco dial up and uptill now ive had great service. I was hoping they would do a cheap broadband but Im affraid if its with NTL (who I dropped for Tesco due to crap service) then I better rethink. No way Im having NTL again.
DialStart is cheaper..
Never heard of DailStart. Definitely the cheapest I've seen for an unlimited 512k service. Are there any restrictions on ports?
... www.plusnet.co.uk.I am still on their £18.99 (no peer to peer or newsgroups but uncapped)
Is that policy for all their services? I was thinking about changing to them on a 1mb premier/unlimited package for £29.99, but without p2p access, unlimited access seems pointless.
DialStart (http://www.dialstart.co.uk/adsl/default.asp) is cheaper...
Was just applying with dialstart, then found the following in the terms anc conditions:
We reserve the right to introduce a monthly usage allowance (Internet usage, downloads, sending & receiving attachments) on our broadband service, by giving 30 days notice. You will also have the option to upgrade to a service with a larger usage allowance.
We reserve the right to increase the Fee at any time on giving not less than 28 days notice to you.
So it looks like an attractive sign up price, to be followed by a not so attract monthly allowance. :suspect:
If you're on a revolving monthly debit (i.e. out of contract) then Wanadoo's £17.99 1 MBit package is much better.
yes, it's capped at 2GB but they can't enforce it at the moment so why not use that until they do!
Wanadoo will be enforcing the limit very soon.
They are going to introduce software to do it, if the 2gb limit doesn't bother you it is a good package.

I thought about this, then changing to the higher cap (eg 6GB) when they start enforcing. Trouble is, they restart your 12 month contract when you change package.

But Tesco dial up is NTL, so you are already having NTL again!
Good price and good service... www.e7even.com
There is a connection fee of £50, but it is only £200 per year - about £16.67 per month...
Only catch is that you pay up front for 12 months access. At least with that there is no way they can change your fees.
I've been with them for the last few months and there service has been fantastic. Only contacted their tech support once. I logged a support call on the website and they rang me up to do some troubleshooting... Turned out my router (which I bought from somewhere else - not provided by e7even) had got itself stuck. Flashed it and everything was fine again. :D
Recommended
P.S. They give you a static IP address, no limits on downloads, or download content, i.e., peer to peer is fine.
Wanadoo will be enforcing the limit very soon.

It's difficult to know who to belive to be honest. Even their MD admitted it might be well into next year before they could enforce.
Personally I don't get near it and for £2 over 56k unlimited it's a good option.
Does anyone know which modem comes with Tesco broadband?

It's the last step after signing up to select the free modem, slightly sneaky as you have to actually select it (although fairly obvious), or you don't get one.
ive just registered this morning for it :)
Is it a 12 month contract?
For new customers I think yes. For old customers I don't think it restarts anything but I could be wrong.
The way I see it is (say they capped from next April) you could get 8-9 months of unlimited and then 3 months of limited (over the summer anyway).

I'd love to get the wanadoo deal but 2gb is just ridculous.. I'd use it within about a day... if it'll really be a while before they starrt then I'd defo go for it, but I download at least 2 gigs worth a day, so that wouldn't be for me if it really was being capped!
anyone got an activation date for tesco yet ?
I thought about this, then changing to the higher cap (eg 6GB) when they start enforcing. Trouble is, they restart your 12 month contract when you change package.
Seems I was wrong about this (or rather the helpline person I spoke to yesterday was) - you can change option with Wanadoo 1Mb 3 times in 12 months without penalty. So as the caps won't be applied for a few months, I'm going for the £17.99 notional "2GB cap" then I'll to a higher allowance when they impose capping. Should work out at about £23/month over the year for 1Mb ADSL including installation and modem.

Nope...
It's all open as I'm on the 512k premier and have just applied for the 1 meg.
There is an option to switch it on if you want to block it, but it's upto you and is controlled by you.

V21 (http://www.v21.co.uk)
I had dialup with them last year and they were cr@p, availability was pretty abominable. I guess they were putting their resources into broadband.
Forums were pretty heavily censored, and closed to non-subscribers so you couldn't see what support problems other users were having before you signed up. They said this was because non-subscribers were disrupting the boards. Possibly true.
Eventually got sick of their poor uptime and cancelled my account - which they chopped immediately even though it had another 3weeks til the next direct debit.
Smelly.

I'm on NTL already, so I don't suppose it'd be too awful to change over to Tesco, but I need an ethernet modem and that seems to be USB-only. Wonder if NTL/Tesco would let me keep my NTL cable modem...?
I'm on NTL's 150k service (which is supposed to be upgraded to 300k soon, yeah right...) so a bit extra speed for about the same price would be welcome. May wait until my PC is more accessible for regular downloading use though - any idea whether the price will hike or installation costs will come in?
Wonder if NTL/Tesco would let me keep my NTL cable modem...?
Tesco is ADSL not cable broadband, so a cable modem won't work.
I thought NTL only did cable? Do they do ADSL as well? Im now a tad confused.... what this tesco service is....
Tesco is an ADSL service, which is using NTL infrastructure (ie the broadband network, once your connection reaches NTL).
NTL offer cable broadband in cable areas, they also offer dialup (not sure if they do there own ADSL).
If AOL don't pull their finger out by the time I get back from holiday, I'll be switching to this Tesco product. AOL won't do anything until I get Home Highway removed, and spent over two hours going round in circles between them and BT on Monday morning! HH is being deactivated at the exchange tomorrow and the equipment removed on the 22nd. Can I ask for a conventional BT phone socket to be left in the conservatory where the HH box is situated without incurring an extra cost? Or will it be a DIY job?

Try Centralpoint BB. Uncapped.
512K £18.99 a month
1 Meg £25.99 a month
2 Meg £35.49 a month
£30 activation and no modem but only a 3 month contract. Been with them 6 months, not a sniff of a problem.
Wish I'd known about that 3 months ago Blobber, coulda had broadband this summer :'( :)

You can get a good enough ADSL modem for a miserly £24 at Ebuyer, http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=1679264896&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=48409
I've got 1 Meg with them and it's excellent. I'd already purchased a wireless modem router before subscribing so the lack of modem didn't worry me anyway.
Should have mentioned the website earlier too, it's www.cpbb.co.uk
anyone still waiting to get connected ?
signed up on the 6th of september, no activation date yet.
I signed up on the 6th, should be live today.

I got a Speedtouch 330 off Ebay for around £24 IIRC.
A lot of people are going wireless these days so there should be plenty about.
anyone else still waiting for an activation date, might go with dailstart as tesco customer support doesn't seem to exist at all.
Activation date is down to BT.
I got my tesco broadband yesterday and so far so good. But how do i connect my broadband to xbox live. Please help because i havent got a clue about routers etc.
Thanks
10 days, 2 hours and 14 minutes, still waiting.

Waited 15 working days with no activation EMail from Tesco. Contacted their support, to be told that there was a delay until BT upgraded the system, this could be anything from a few days to a few weeks.
I asked for my order to be cancelled, and have signed up to www.EFHBroadband.com who are offering uncapped 512kb ADSL for £9.99 + VAT  . There is a steep sign on fee, but overall for 12 months, still cheaper than Tesco. EFH have given me an activation date 8 days (not working days) after signup.
Support have answered questions quickly, and support phone line is NOT premium rate.
Price is limited to first 1000 customers per month, to reduce excessive expansion problems according to their website.
I originally ordered on the 18th, I've not received the free modem yet just an email saying "There will be a delay in activating your phone line for Broadband. This is due to some capacity issues at your local BT exchange", I don't know what that means (months? weeks? days?), they've not replied to the emails I've sent and the order has seemingly cancelled itself twice... It's all a bit...hazy and not quite what I'd hoped for from Tesco.
The company I work for offers Broadband to our customers through another larger company - much like Tesco through NTL. (Don't bother asking - It's not particularly cheap broadband!)
Our contact at the large ISP sent me an e-mail yesterday :-
"We are finding that many orders are being delayed due to no capacity being available in the Exchange. BT have provided us with data which gives an indication of when capacity should be available. BT accepts no responsibility for the accuracy of the data contained."
Voila - The file he sent me (http://www.taulath.co.uk/forums/CoverageDataOnCapacity.xls) (520Kb Excel File)
Don't ask me what exchange you live nearest - I don't know. Or ask what the A and G mean - Again
It may be useful for some people though I guess!
I'm on tesco broadband right now, good speeds, signed up on 6th september, connected and ready to go on the 27th september.
There's a key if you go to the second page (using the tab at the bottom).
I dunno, only been able to get broadband here since the start of September...wouldn't mind if it was Sticksville, Tennessee but I live in Bristol. Bah.
Looks like G = good, A = average and R = ...erm, rubbish!? Or more likely Green, Amber & Red.
Well spotted!
G = 40+ ports available
A = 1-39 ports available
R = 0 ports available
So if it's Red then no chance of ADSL till an upgrade - If it's Amber you need to order quick!

I signed up on the 11th and was told the BT Capacity problems as well. However my activation date has come through as the 1st which is fine.
Remember this is a datastream product not IP Stream so I think a lot of exchanges needed the DSLAM's upgraded.

Hmm - I ordered on Tues 21st September and also received the email about the capacity problems aswell. I rang Tesco yesterday (28th) and the guy couldn't really tell me any more - they are just waiting on BT now. He said if I don't hear anything after 15 days then I should ring back....
Not very helpful...! I get the feeling if I'd gone with somebody else I would have had an activation date already. I might still cancel and go with Pipex....
I found this handy exchange checker the other day at SamKnows (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php) You can use it to find your local exchange (via the availablity checker which the link goes directly to) and get an idea of its current capacity and upgrades. Mine is chocker currently but is having the virtual paths increased today. Mind you I haven't noticed problems at peak time. You can also see the other LLUs present such as Bulldog, HomeChoice etc. All the "big" exchanges are in London which you can see by using the exchange search and sorting/filtering appropriately.
John - can you give me the number, i've heard nothing for 2 weeks
Signed up on Sunday the 19th, activation date was set for Monday the 27th but plugged my modem in on Saturday the 25th September and it was working! Speed is a constant 576 Kbps.

As their provision is through the NTLFreedom service.
Why do you have to have a bt line.
Rang them tonight, still no clearer to finding out what is going on but they gave me a freephone number (0800 4798181) so at least I don't have to pay to hang on the phone now... How long can it take to get an activation date...?
I ordered on the 14th September not had any contact from them since, no warnings about delays etc... so rang today
Girl didn't sound as though she knew what she was doing, lots of ums and ahhs as she tapped on the keyboard....just to finally tell me they are still waiting for an activation date from BT. She has put a note on the computer that I have called so that should speed things up :suspect:

Never had broadband before - it's all a bit exciting :)
freedom service needs a bt line aswell! it all works through bt which then routes to ntl for synchroisation! no bt line no dsl! but DO NOT BOTHER with tesco servce is ok BUT u WILL NOT get hold of there support team, unless u have friends there ;D
there calls answer for the month are at about 40% they got far more demand than expected!!!! which also wont help contention!

I don't think this works very well, it says my exchange (York) is full yet i already have an activation date for another isp.

The RAG status of the Virtual Path should not prevent you from ordering broadband on an exchange (after all, would BT ever refuse to take money from you? ;) ), but it will explain slowdowns at peak times. It is _not_ referring to the physical port availability (which is monitored continuously by BT, and it is extremely rare for there to be a lack of ports available).

Ta Busby - that will come in useful. :)
Anyway, good news - I've got an activation date....!
21/9/04 - Ordered BB
21/9/04 - Received email about exchange capacity
27/9/04 - Chased order
1/10/04 - Email stating that they were waiting for an activation date from BT
1/10/04 - Email with activation date (about 5 hrs after the one above)
8/10/04 - Target activation date..!
Hopefully it will be activated earlyer (it has been the 3 times I've had broadband before). I was starting to worry and was contemplating cancelling my order (especially because of the ntl invovlement!!) but it seems that Tesco have come good in the end. I've got my router plugged in with the my login details stored ready & waiting..!

Good news - I'm typing this whilst connected using my Tesco BB connection...! It was activated sometime today (5th October) and was not due to be activated until Friday 8th October. Seems like quite a decent speed:
ADSL Link-------------Downstream--Upstream
Connection Speed-----576 kbps-----288 kbps
Line Attenuation-------55 db--------31.5 db
Noise Margin-----------29 db--------28 db
blundred
05-10-2004, 18:01
Have had Tesco broadband for a couple of weeks now and seems fine. Although there is a constant 576kbps it does seem to go a little slower now and again. Tesco were great prior to connection modem sent out in time and connected on the date said. Unfortunately did try to get customer services but to no avail as i was having teething problems still waiting for call back after about 21 days nothing yet! sorted the problem out myself ?
or you could even try Virgin.net at £18 a month is on the same rack as tesco, u still wont get customer service due to the amount of calls going to there centre but the BB is decent and its a roling monthly cotract!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there any charge for cancelling? If not I might go for this Supanet 1MB deal
No charge unless you've had your activation date emailed to you, then the charge depends on how close to that date it is.
Think I'm going to cancel...been three weeks since I frst ordered...they somehow cancelled it twice to start with. Everytime I ring up they promise I'll get an activation date in the next couple of days...it never comes though. Sigh.
Just spoke to them after being on hold for 12mins, as Charlie said no charge for cancelling before an activation date is issued.
He also told me that they are waiting for BT to upgrade the exchange, even though they do have capacity at the exchange they can't handle the particular 'flavour' of Broadband offered by Tesco whatever that means.
I am going to ring Supanet to see if they can get me their particular 'flavour' :p any faster before I cancel Tesco
I think the "flavour" refers to Tesco using Datastream, not IPstream for broadband...i think this is the reason for the delays on the exchanges.
I think the "flavour" refers to Tesco using Datastream, not IPstream for broadband...i think this is the reason for the delays on the exchanges.
That doesn't mean anything to me, whats the difference? Which is best?
Hmm, well, I'm no expert but from searching around on the web it seems IPstream is generally viewed as better...nicked from adslguide.org:
"Which is better, IPStream or DataStream?
Neither IPStream nor DataStream is 'better' necessarily. These are both BT Wholesale provided services but they deliver the connection to the ISP in a different way.
IPStream is a service where the user traffic is routed longer inside BT's managed network whereas with DataStream, the ISP takes one or more 'virtual path' (VP) circuits to each local exchange so they can manage contention themselves.
Most ISPs use DataStream to deliver services with high contention ratios spread over very small numbers, so often DataStream will deliver worse performance, however technically it is capable of more customised services, including 1:1 contention. Therefore, you should not choose a service solely because it uses IPStream or DataStream but look into user experiences of the particular service. DataStream's advantage in the current market is for ultra low cost services, or low contention / uncontended services or where Quality of Service (QoS) is needed"
Thanks, I've just cancelled Tesco and going for Supanet instead
I've just cancelled with Tesco too, think I'll try Pipex...bit more expensive but good reviews seemingly...Demon look tempting though.

Has anyone's direct debit came of yet?Mines hasnt.mmm but on there site it says i have to pay £34. £20 for this month and £14 for last but they arent taking the money.
I'm trying to get them to stop charging me for the old dial-up I no longer want/need. It is seemingly impossible...

Log into your account at www.tesco.net and change your dial-up account into a PAYG one. Job done!
yeah, but I've rung them three times (as the details in my Account didn't change), they said they'd cancel it. So if I have to do it myself, why didn't they tell me that? Bah. If I change it now they'll probably say I haven't given them 30 days notice?
