View Full Version : Cowboy Bebop Boxset

For those of us who already own the separate (not many here I should imagine) releases but would like the boxset then we have to order exclusively from 'Right Stuff Int'....

CB Box Link (http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/195092168172025665/browse/item/56201/4/0/0)

its $12.99 + $15 p&p (!!!) and very limited (to 1000 I think)

and here are some rather nice pics of it....

Pic 1 (http://www.rightstuf.com/images/large_images/cbbox1.jpg)
Pic 2 (http://www.rightstuf.com/images/large_images/cbbox2b.jpg)
Pic 3 (http://www.rightstuf.com/images/large_images/cbbox3b.jpg)
Pic 4 (http://www.rightstuf.com/images/large_images/cbbox4b.jpg)

with shipping its roughly £20, would be OK but we don't get the OST CD that comes when you buy the complete set so it makes the price seem a little steep....

whos going for it then? trying to decide myself - all the more annoying that RS Int require scans of your CC Card and a form of ID :(

It's too expensive to just buy one of them but if we can get together a few people and buy several at the same time I'd be interested.

Plus only having to send one copy of CC etc rather that one each would be a definite bonus.

We need to sort this out quickly if we do want to do it, though

kanedaa

I did think about a co-buy - the only foreseeable problem would be customs charges as just one set is over the limit and its gonna be a big box so will likely attract attention.

it basically works out to...

1 = £20
2 = £15.50 each
3 = £14 each
4 = £13.30 each
5 = £12.90 each

not bad, but any customs charges would most likely put the price right up again :(

are cardboard boxes zero VAT rated (exempt from customs) ?

Hmmm good thought... :(

Pity about that. I'd like the box but £20 plus the hassle (and insecurity) of sending CC details all over the world is just too much.

kanedaa
09-11-2001, 13:56
The Badger may very well have a point - customs surely can't charge us for a cardboard box  can they?

Just checked http://www.hmce.gov.uk/notices/701-39pa.htm#Group%203%20-%20Books,%20etc

I cant find any Zero-rated category that these boxes would fall into :(

Somebody could call National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000 to find out for sure though.

I decided to order one for the heck of it, not a great fan of the series but the box looks very nice, RightStuff said they should be getting them next week.

kanedaa
09-11-2001, 17:24
I thought you were gonna go for the whole set Bedford? anyways, you gave me a nudge in the right direction so I've put in an order (doesn't seem so bad when I consider I would have paid more for a Paul Champagne box if they were still available)....

is this the first time you've used Right Stuff?

in which case, did you just send a scan of your VISA or are you gonna wait till they contact you?

also, there checkout system was @@@@e, took me 3 attempts as I crashed when I entered special instructions and then again when I tried to use my AMEX card (which doesn't follow the standard xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx number system)...

just hope they deliver it in a sturdy box!

I was gonna get the complete dvd boxset, i may still do but since these boxes are limited to around 1000, may aswell get one, plus im getting the new lain boxet so spending to much again, as im sure you know that feeling to well :)

This is the first time ive used them, and i went straight through the checkout first time with no problems, entered my details, then cc info and got my order conformation order, no need to send scans.

the same was said with dvdplanet not long ago, lots of people saying they need to send stuff in before the order was accpeted, but i just went through and ordered with no hassles at all....

kanedaa
09-11-2001, 17:49
hmm. well, I got the scan thing from their very own shipping page but i'm just gonna leave it and see what happens.

does look to be a very nice set though, can't wait to see it.

is that the only special thing about it ?? the box ?? and did you say you dont even get an extra disc that you get when buying seperately ?? doesnt sound worth it ......

Purpledump
10-11-2001, 01:07
Ruskins - Guess it's worth it if you are a Cowboy Bebop fan, and you can get the OST disc separately. Looks nice, sounds sturdy. It'd be more worth it, if people did do a co-buy together.

Kanedaa - How you doin' :). I attempted a purchase but it also errors after the special instructions part. I'm just too tired now :p. BTW, off topic: any update on the BV and Mononoke front?

Bedford - For DVDplanet, did you use Master or Visa? With Visa, I seem to get hassled by some stores, but with my brothers :p Master card, it's all plain sailing.

kanedaa
10-11-2001, 01:18
Ruskins - don't bloody say that! you'll get me questioning my purchase!! nah, its definitely a fan thing, and when it comes to Anime I'm always buying stuff like this!

Purpledump - hiya mate, the BV Mononoke thing hasn't really progressed mainly because I've not got a contact address and i've been really busy lately. Plus it would seem they've released a standard disc now so if thats not fixed anychance of getting it sorted I would say is now gone :(

as for the Right Stuff website - yeah, its bloody annoying!

dave.

Ruskins
10-11-2001, 01:21
what exaclty is on the OSD disk ?

kanedaa
10-11-2001, 01:52
its OST - Original Soundtrack CD - of which only the 1st CD is included with the full boxset, there are quite a few I think (at least 3).

I use Visa, thats why i was puzzled by what people had been saying about dvdplanet, and my order just went straight through.

Bedford - Hmm, that is strange...

Kanedaa - It breaks my heart. Sold my R1 copy just for the PAL R2. Now thinking about selling that and getting the R1 again :P... but that's another topic.

BTW, just wanted to try and order the box again, but the it's SOLD OUT now! The lucky fans that got in early, congrats! For the rest of us, I'm sure some will pop up on e-bay, soon.

As far as ive seen about, thats your lot, head over to ebay in about a months time and prepare to be ripped off.

I believe rightstuff inc. made the deal with bandai to distribute the boxes in the US so i dont think they will be available again.

But who knows in the world of anime....

On another note, got the Mononoke R2 boxset today, was quite pleased with it, everything is fine except the obvious shambles that is the subtitles, when they appear and nothing is being said all i can do is tut. Just need to hope the 3-disc jobby is not dubtitled, otherwise i will be canceling my order.

evilvampire
11-11-2001, 00:26
Well depot have it for £120 approx. I've stuck it in my flexi so here's hoping.
Got my mononoke box set from play and the box is crushed, so thats going back.
I've just ordered Trigun at boxoffice for around £102 pounds. I believe this is the best price unless someone can tell me otherwise.

kanedaa
11-11-2001, 00:36
evilvampire - if you want the full boxset (6xDVDs, 1xCD and the Box) then i should imagine an order pretty much anywhere will guarantee you a copy...and yup I'm quite sure Trigun is cheapest at DVDBoxoffice (got my order in)..

Thought there was some confusion here, but never mind. The talk was about the box on its own for those who already have the DVDs. The actual boxset is also very limited, but I'm crossing my fingers for you. If you're open minded about anime, then Cowboy Bebop will blow you away! And you'll be getting all episodes in one go!

EDIT: Darn, kanedaa replied already.

I am also ordering the Japanese Mononke, partly for the German dub aswell, when I save up for some major Ghibli spendage. Gosh, and with the 3 Disc making of, I'll have a lot of Mononoke. It is pointless, really :)!

Yeah I know the thread was originally about the box on its own. Hope no-one minds me hijacking it. Its just that I find when it comes to anime there isn't much talk about it on these forums so I thought it would help for others to keep things together that are kinda related.

If you seen an anime thread and need some help, hijack away.

Now, wheres the best place to get the boxset (including dvds) and avoiding those party pooping customs officers.

dvdplanet have it for $139 which is about 95 quid plus shipping takes it to £107, im not sure if they would mark the value down though, any help apreciated.

kanedaa
11-11-2001, 01:00
Definitely hijack away evilvampire - more chatter we can get the better IMO...

as for the Bebop set and price...

DV-Depot are usually v.good at getting past customs (most would say its 100% guaranteed) and its not too bad at roughly £128 by my calculations....

Express.com is tempting, $149.99 + $2.49 p&p with their current offer & unlike most others, in my experience if you fill out a crappy 'gift message' they'll mark the goods as 'commercial sample' or 'software' resulting in no customs charges....but i've not used them for a long long time now so can't be sure it'll still work. but then its no cheaper than DVDPlanet.

as for Mononoke R2 (both versions)....

BV screwed the pooch :D I just hope the R2 Jap is not dubtitle, but i'm not getting my hopes up :(

Okay hi-jacking time.
I always forget about anime dvds until some thing like the cowboy box thing happens then I remember just how great they are. Anyway
Has anyone seen the new UK release of SF2. Is this worth getting or wait till someone else does a better jobs. Can't seem to find any reviews.
Whats peoples thoughts on the Lain series. I love all anime but only as long as story is good and obviously the rest, animation etc. I loved perfect blue if that helps.
And has anyone got the Battle Angel Alita on R1, whats the disc like.
Thanks guys and girls.

Ruskins

Is there Actually anything to be gained from buying this other than a pretty box ?? is it considerably cheaper than buying all the sessions seperately ?

kanedaa
11-11-2001, 09:20
Hey, we said hijack but don't take the ******!!

just joshing :D ;)

evilvampires queries first...

Has anyone seen the new UK release of SF2. - There is a thread on this somewhere, apparently its Non-Anamorphic 1:85:1, average transfer, dodgy 5.1 soundtrack and zero extra features but it should be uncut unlike the R1. I've actually ordered this for a friend (testing the water :D ) so i'll be able to give a full report (maybe review if I feel like it) later in the week.

Whats peoples thoughts on the Lain series. My common response to this is....Good, thought provoking, gorgeous animation but its a headf*** if I ever saw one and I personally found the rewatch value a little dubious. With that said, i'm thinking about re-buying the series on R4 as it certainly is intriguing. If you liked Perfect Blue you'll probably get on better with Lain than I did (I found PB a little weird and not all that rewatchable as well) - great thing with this series is now its hitting R4 its cheap enough to try out (unless you really want that boxset).

And has anyone got the Battle Angel Alita on R1 Review (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews/region1/a-d/battle_angel-1.htm) looks like a good disc actually (surprised me!).

Ruskins - Cheapest and most reliable for the separate discs is ********* @ £16.99each or £101.94 total...

Cheapest and most reliable for the Box is DV-Depot @ £128ish which gets you the OST (£15ish on its own) and the Box (£20ish on its own) so if Bebop is your thing and you don't already own it, then yeah, get the damn box!

evilvampire

Kanadaa thanks for the replies. Like I said I forget about anime untill something twigs me again and then all the questions come flooding back.
It doesn't look like there is any benifit from getting the box for Lain. So I'll probably wait for r4. When is this by the way. Thanks for the replies.

Just to add, I only seen PB once on vid of a mate. Thought about watching it again on numerous occasion but chickened out every time.

I don't know to be honest but I'd take a guess and say it would be the American releases - can't see them bundling a £20 Japanese CD with the boxset! Whats wrong with the american CDs then? Never really been inspired to get the Bebop music, I love it in the series, but its never struck me as something i'd play otherwise, unlike Noir - oh how I need that OST :)

erm, anyway - I'd say Perfect Blue would be cheapest at Play247 (isn't everything?), probably £13.99 like most Manga UK stuff.

I had the US released OST for Resident Evil and to me it seemed very cheeply made, and i just didnt plain like it, flogged it on ebay for a nice profit though ;)

I got the same email last night, and the fact i have no form of photo ID and also that they will not take the shipping off the value marked (which is very unfair i think) and its not exactly a little box, im gonna pass on this and just buy the bloody dvd boxset when its out.

kanedaa
13-11-2001, 18:43
yeah, i'm not impressed but I need this box as I can't afford to buy the whole set again unless I can sell my current discs for an outrageous amount!

I've mailed them the info required, you don't need a photo ID according to their website, just something verifying name/address and I think signature...i sent it all in a password protected zip file (not much protection i know but its something) where the password is a piece of my customer information they have on record.

asked them to at least mark the package as a Gift as I blamed their excessive shipping costs on the reason I asked them to mark it down in the first place!

dave.

kanedaa
14-11-2001, 21:13
Right Stuff got my scans ok, and they said something to this effect regarding customs....

The invoice itself is not with the package or listed on the pakage, therefore the total cost is not listed on the package itself.

so looks like it could be okay if i'm understanding that?

apparently they're shipping out tomorrow, if anyone is interested i'll post some better pics here when I get it.

got some info for you evilvampire - just received my mates copy of SF2 Animated Movie and oh dear oh dear oh dear :(

Its not DD5.1 despite what the case says, DD2.0 and it didn't sound too great - just average really.

Picture = Non-Anamorphic - and its just poor, just like the R1 its soft, washed out, print damage, in the night scenes at the start (ryu vs sagat) its just grey, you can see the lack of resolution via lines in the picture on those scenes!

It is however, UNCUT. ie - Chun Li exposes herself, Dejay swears

extras = trailer

disappointing

A big yes to that. Madman are delaying releasing several Manga titles with the sole intention of finding better source materials cos the one Manga have are just plain @@@@e.

titles I know of (from forum browsing on the Madman website) are...

Wings of Honneamise (my most eagerly awaited of the lot)
Streetfighter 2

and i think, but i'm not as sure on this one...

fist of the north star (couldn't give a monkeys myself)

We can only but hope I guess, but none of this is definite.

Just found out my Cowboy Bebop set is in at depot. I was hoping it wouldn't come in for a few more weeks. Now I've got to decide whether to buy it now or wait. I hate this. Event worse is its classed as a weight 7 so I can buy it now without adding anything.

I know about the 45 day thing. I haven't seen the series but thats not the problem, I'm sure I'll like it. Its the money thats the problem. I've ordered from the TAU weekend totalling over £120, that gonna ship soon. I've pre-ordered the Trigun boxset at boxoffice (like your self) which is out soon. And so if I order this,,, as well its a bit scarey really. Also Crimbo round the corner. I keep telling myself I deserve it, but a part of me is a bit afraid of the Visa when it comes. If I order this my girlfriend is gonna kill me.

Funny as hell, great characters, excellent music and a whole lot of fun. I've been waiting for what seems like an eternity for it to come to dvd, after seeing all the series before hand i just fell in love with it a gathered whatever i could for it.

This is news to me, too. I don't know about CT being so ideal. I guess you're right about the (relatively) best 'big' company. I am just thinking back to their Hong Kong releases. First couple of releases were good, altough cut for pace. Then it went downhill with Once upon a time in China, in terms of quality. I don't think they would cut Anime to pace it up, but recently, unexpected things keep happening, so who knows.

Regarding Cowboy Bebop Movie, Bandai would have done fine. Their Jin-Roh release sounds absolutely fantastic, although it'll have a R2 Japanese style price tag. At least they could have reunited the english voice cast...

I guess in terms of their HK releases they aren't so ideal - but with the two anime titles they have on the cards (Metropolis and Bebop Movie) they were involved with the Japanese Theatrical releases so presumably they'll have access to the best source material. Metropolis is already rumoured for a March 2002 release, Original Language with English Subs on R1 DVD.

I guess if they start licensing anime outside of their involvement it may not work as well but like you say, I can't see them cutting the films.

As an alternative look to Miramax who have secured the rights to Ghost in the Shell 2 and (not anime but related) Avalon. TBH - films like these in the hands of Miramax/Disney scares the ***** out of me cos they are just the kind of company who will hack them to pieces (but lets hope they don't eh!).

still no bloody confirmation of shipping from Rightstuf - do these idiots do e-mail confirmation?

anyone want a set of Bebop discs? £90 inc p&p? then i can buy the box!

Just watched the first 7 episodes of bebop and like it alot, its better than i thought it would be, but is there an actual story arc that occurs later in the series, because so far it has just been seperate storylines, not that its a bad thing some eps have been very funny and some very violent and bloody.

Good fun though so far :)

Did anyone elses OST that came in the box have a little JVC sticker stuck on the wrapper of the cd covering the Victor Company bit? i know why it was done just seems a bit pointless.

Bandai Boss: Here you go jeff i've got a great job for you today!
Jeff: whats that sir?
Bandai Boss: Stick 9000 of these tiny little stickers on these cd's theres a good chap.

I know what you mean by that. Not only because of the cuts, but whether they'll ever see the light of day in the west. Don't trust Miramax with Anime (Mononke R1 being an exception). Do you think they will try on go for the limited theatrical run with those, or are they straight to DVD?

Back to Bebop. Glad to see new people discovering it. If the search engine worked, I would know whether there already was a dicussion on

The ending. I'm spoil tagging this, as not to hype the fact that the ending may need some discussion :)

soz budge, bloody nice offer but my box arrived today so i can't be bothered ordering the whole set again!

Nice box, but like Bedford says, seems a lot smaller than those pictures made out!

Don't really know if its worth me taking any pics as the ones on the Rightstuf site (and in my 1st post on this thread i think?) do it justice - although I will take a pic with a DVD standing next to it/inside it to show you the kind of size we're looking at.
