Im new to this lark but my VCR has just gone kaputt!
So im looking for a DVD recorder, just DVD not HDD as well.
Which are the ones to avoid?
I heard that the DVDR70 was bad but the DVDR75 was ok with a firmware update?
Im on a budget so cheap is good :)
Thanks

It is extremely useful. I often start off a recording and then hit play to see what the start of the recording was like for position and quality. I don't really use the editing on the deck (I have the older E50) but it's similar to minidisc in operation.
The cost of DVD-RAM discs has dropped a lot recently too, about £15 for 10 from SVP or £15 for 5 Panasonic discs from argos if you need discs in a hurry.

You can only use the timeslip function with Ram discs.

I have an old Panny E30 which is still giving good service. However if I were going to buy a new machine (sans HD) it would be the sony GX3.

The Sony GX3 is about the same price as the Panasonic E55. I got one from digital-point a couple of weeks ago for £237 inc delivery. It's an excellent recorder and will record on DVD-R, DVD-RW & DVD+RW. It also accepts RGB input

I'm considering the:
JVC DRM10S (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=137&a=60823&g=19373&url=http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=JVC-DRM10S&clear=)
Excellent record and playback. Versatile on range of media capabilities. Looks like a real winner in the reviews. Now available at a great price.
But - really put off by its lack of Multi-Region capability :(
Panasonic DMRE55EBS (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=137&a=60823&g=19373&url=http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetails/index.asp?modelcode=PAN-DMRE55EBS&clear=)
Great reviews of course. Strong on recording quality and it is Multi-Region. Also now available at great price.
But - not quite convinced that it is strong on Playback of pre-recorded discs...?
Then there's -
Sony RDR-GX300 (http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/rdrgx300/rdrgx300.htm)
Very new as far as I can tell. So the price will take a while to drop and there are no reviews around (but checking the magazines today).
Any inside news on this one?
My feeling is that Sony's are strong on Playback of pre-recorded discs and this has good recording media capabilities (records on DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW) .
Not sure it has Progressive Scan.
Any views?

Fattus,
the important thing here is that you don't scrimp on price. The Panasonic E55 and Sony GX3 are the lowest you should be prepared to accept. We have the JVC in work and I don't rate it.
I would personally say the GX3 is best if all you want to do is record and playback. It lacks good editing features but arguably has the best playback of recorded and pre-recorded. It does have very crap creatable menus though.
The Pannie is better for recording and editing but uses the more expensive RAM.
I'd wait for the GX300 to see what that's like. The specs are very impressive.
