View Full Version : Taxi Driver or The Thing??
I need some help with what disc to add to my HMV BOGOFF order. I've already put Stand By Me down, but have come down to a choice of these two films.
Problem is, I've never seen them all. I've seen the first half hour-ish of The Thing and from what I remember wasn't overly impressed. It just seemed a bit dated.
So which one should I go for?? The Thing or Taxi Driver?? I have quite a wide variety of favourite films ranging from Stand By me to Leon to Chasing Amy to Rugrats movie, so can I have your opinions on which I am more likely to enjoy.
Cheers Stu G

I'd pick 'The Thing' - I bought it in the last HMV offer and think it's a great film with some cracking extras too.
That and the fact that I just don't like Taxi Driver would sway it for me ;)
'The Thing' is one of the more regularly played DVDs I've got. Simply for the absolutely fantastic documentary on it. :D
I've not seen 'Taxi Driver', one of those I've not got around to yet :) , but I would have the impression that that's even more dated ?
The Thing, without a doubt. Should be in everyone's collection. Carpenter's Best film after Halloween. Not dated at all IMHO. Still some of the best sfx ever put on screen. Balls to CGI!
& I'm with Mr Flibble on Taxi Driver. Could never see what all the fuss was about.

Duh, easy one http://members.tripod.co.uk/nickhorton/GreenSmilies/tongue.gif : Both. Failing that, get rid of Stand By Me and get the other two!
Easy choice - it has to be The Thing

I only saw Taxi Driver earlier this year (on DVD) and the thing that suprised me most was that it wasn't how I'd expected after listening to people talk about it. It's a good film on a very respectable disc, but I would have to join the consensus here and go for THE THING. The best non-anamorphic picture that I remember and a very good set of extras. The first disc that I bought, along with Ronin.
(Little devil on your shoulder) Maybe you should buy both and come back and ask us what else you should buy, to make it up to 4 discs?

Taxi Driver. Far superior film, but it depends on your tastes as they're very different films.
Taxi Driver disc is crammed with extras and has a big bonus of being anamorphic, unlike The Thing (and I'd bet The Thing will get an anamorphic SE release sometime which is why I've not bothered).

Well just to be controversial i'd say buy The Thing and Taxi Driver and get Stand by me later.
OKay then...let me swap this around.
If I buy The Thing and Taxi Driver and Stand By Me, what else could I get that's decent from the HMV BOGOFF offer? This could well mean of course that some of these turn up in the classifieds in a bit, but as they'll be bought for a tenner each, I'm bound to make a profit.
So any suggestions as to what else to get from the offer?? And I've already got the JP/LW set from Amazon.

In the BOGOF deal, is the film you're buying £20, so you're basically getting 2 DVDs for £10 each????
If so, you can get all 3 films for £9.99 each at Play247 (http://www.Play247.com)
You'd be better off getting 2 titles that aren't available elsewhere for a tenner!

Get Taxi Driver. One of the best movies ever made..and the best documentary. Then buy The Thing.

The Thing R2 has a very much inferior picture to the R1, although neither is anamorphic.

Taxi driver, without a doubt. I vividly remember after years of having Taxi Driver on vhs, being amazed by it, all over again.
Not story wise, picture quality wise! It was like watching a whole different film, the detail was astounding, seeing things in the movie I had never seen before. I have the thing as well, but you'll watch Taxi Driver more, it is a much better film that hasn't really dated much whereas The Thing has.

Taxi Driver is a great film and a great disc. And, after all the earlier hassles with bad batches of Taxi Driver R2, I can report that I got one from the October HMV.co.uk sale and it works perfectly in a Pioneer player! Hooray!
:)
The Thing, without a doubt
Both are excellent films in their own right. The only thing that may sway your opinion is that The Thing is 2:35 non-anamorphic. Both are essential purchases IMHO.

Two Classics:
But, Taxi Driver has to be the 'one' if they can be only one.
