Saw this last night and I'm still shaking.
Haneke (he of FUNNY GAMES, CODE UNKNOWN) appears to be going from strength to strength, and this Cannes award winner only goes to endorse the fact that he is fast becoming one of the leading directors in the world today.

The journey is harrowing,of course, but fulfilling as the film draws every imaginable emotion from you, leaving you exhausted by the end.

Performances are outstanding.

What's it about?
Without giving anything away, the film concerns a straight-faced, no-nonsense Piano teacher who lives with her mother and who harbours an unhealthy sexual appetite based on years of repression. Her relationship with one of her pupils is the focus of the film's length.

In French, with English subs. this is not for everybody, but those who choose to go will have an unforgettable experience.

Im giving this a bump because I just watched this film and for people who dont get to upset by powerful but disturbing films then you will find this is one of those films which is a must see

While Gasper Boes I Stand Alone was maybe a little more disturbing The Piano Teacher is a better film due to the well crafted emotional and psychological complexity of the characters and better overall direction, acting and storyline

Unconfortable but compelling viewing - you will either love or hate the ending - very unlikely you will be indifferent to it

p.s. was anybody else extremely irritated by the opening credits appearing a full 8 minutes after the start of the film ?

Agreed - but is it me or does she very often get typecasted as a ****** off uptight middle-aged woman on the verge of a manic episode?
As I often say she's the sole french actress I'd be scared of... (her and Arletty's voice :D )
