Think thats the best description

This morning after coming home from work I noticed a strange blockiness on my plasma TV - like a small chess board effect - patchy over the screen

I have noticed it before but it was only this morning I twigged what was the cause - in a room across the landing a hairdryer was on - the second it was switched off the picture came back perfect

What can be done to prevent this ?

Probably not noise coming down the cable, but across the airwaves, ie plain old radio interference. It can also happen if a badly supressed motor vehicle drives by, quite often a small moped.

I've had a few incidences recently with radio interference in the car from other vehicles.

As for hairdryers, I think they are quite prone to cause interference,

How's about a filter like this (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=2501&productId=112567) ? Don't know too much about electricity, but looks like the sort of thing you're after. :)

I used to get the same effect with an internal aerial on my tv when a car with a deep sounding exhaust drove past the house. I just thought it was the frequency of the exhaust was close to the tv signal frequency.
