I just started playing this game and after about 5mins of play (sometimes less) the sound just crackles and cuts out. I then have to exit the game and open it again.

Is there anyone else experiencing this on an audigy 2 or another sound card? I updated to the latest drivers to make sure but its still doing it.

Any thoughts?

It seems to be a common problem, I've seen that it can be fixed by lowering the audio acceleration (using DXDiag) or, in a lot of cases, by installing SP2.

Ill install SP2 i think. If i dare.

If i reduce the audio acceleration in DXdiag will it effect performance? Oh, in install SP2.... Just please don't mess up my computer :(

It's because your CPU is being maxed out by the game.

Doom 3 has NO hardware acceleration code for the sound, it's all done in software.

It's gonna be fixed in an upcoming patch.

Lowering it to basic will not affect Doom3 performance, just remember to set it back to full before using any other apps that need sound.

Incidentally, since I've installed SP2, I've not had the above problem .

In the Base folder, open your DoomConfig.cfg file in notepad or wordpad, and add this bind:

bind "x" "s_restart"

where x is a key of your choice. This will restart the sound on the fly meaning you dont have to exit the game to restart the sound system. So whenever the sound cuts out for me i just tap C (my button of choice) and after a second or two it comes back.

I think ill wait for the patch. Or maybe i could get SP2, I just don't want it to bugger my system up as its very stable now.

I've got an audigy 2 and i don't have any sound problems with doom 3.

I wonder why it doesn't have hardware acceleration.

I think the story is because ID "nicked" (for want of a better term) the EAX technology from Creative without asking their permission first but made it their own inbuilt 3d sound. That's why the game isn't EAX certified. Creative got upset, but realised that they'd look a lot better by developing the sound for this engine in the future - so now both sides have kissed and made up.

i had no problems with Doom 3 and my audigy 2 before installing SP2, but the sound went all weird afterwards - distant, muffled and 'off-centre'. uninstalling and reinstalling the soundcard fixed it perfectly though.

Actually it's much deeper than that, John Carmack really hates creative due to their policy on software patents (they had him over a barrel over a commonly used 3D graphics techinique used in D3 which creative happened to hold a patent for and basically forced him to put EAX into future D3 based products in order to avoid legal 'problem'). Have a Google for "John Carmack Creative Patent" and you'lll get loads of stuff, I doubt they'll ever kiss and make up ;)

Ive got an Audigy 2 & SP2 already installed. I installed D3 on wednesday but only got round to running it yesterday, my mate had problems with the sound cutting out so i was prepared.

I setup my controls and display settings and then started a new game.
Intro movie played, craft landed, i looked around and the mouse speed was too slow. Entered the options screen and moved the slider up on the sensitivity at which point the sound cut out

My brother has the same spec PC as myself & my mate, he's already finsihed it on the medium difficulty and had no problems. He's playing it on veteran now and said that it started cutting out a lot.

He has since dropped the hardware acceleration which fixed the problem but he said there is a distinct difference in sound quality from what he was getting.

I don't know how long it will take for a patch to fix this, i'd be tempted to wait for the EAX patch but don't know if that will be forthcoming. Maybe i'll just start KOTOR instead.

As for the licensing, everybody does it, MS have patented the double-click so suddenly the Creative shadowing seems a little more worthy.
It seems like a you scratch my back i'll scratch yours deal and plenty of Q3 engined games support EAX so i was a bit surprised D3 didn't.

The funny thing is I've got Windows XP and an Audigy 2 and I've never had this problem.

I wonder what the factor is that decides you're going to get this problem in Doom 3 or not.

Chande to 2 speakers only in doom instead of surround
