View Full Version : Digital output-phono input?
My friend has a Pioneer DVD with an optical output, he has just bought a 2nd hand Yamaha DSPE492E which can`t take an optical input but relies on the 6 phono input. Is it possible to be able to get a connection.
Question must have been asked before,sorry..
You could get a Dolby-Pro-Logic connection using a pair of phonos, but for DD he may have problems. Does the Pioneer have an on board DD decoder? If so then connect using 6 phono leads. If not then he is a bit snookered, if the dvd player has no coax connection and the amp has no optical connection. The only solutions if that is the case is a converter from optical to coax (bit expensive though) or a new player/amp. Am I right in thinking that the Yamaha has no digital connectors, or just no optical ones?
Thanks for your reply, The Yamaha will,I believe only take the 6 coax inputs from a DVD player that has onboard Digital processor. His Phillips has this, but only an optical output.
Looks as if he will need to get rid of the Yam and purchase an A/V processor with optical input. Any suggestions for a reasonable priced one (i.e cheapish) ?
If the Pioneer (Phillips) player only has a single optical output (ie not 6xphono) then it doesn't have a decoder on board, but it can output a digital signal for decoding by an amp (as do all DVD players).
Best bet on a budget would probably be a Kenwood from Richersounds. They're around the 150 mark and are a great budget amp. Up from that you have the Yamahas and the Sherwoods for consideration. Buying second hand could be the way to go (and the way to sell on the Yamaha). Richer may even be interested in a part ex of the Yamaha for the Kenwood (though they won't give him lots for it).
:) Just- Thanks for your time..
