OK I have a Panasonic TX-32PK25 Flatscreen TV setup in aspect ratio 16:9 with a film that is 16:9 and a dvd player that knows the screen is 16:9 so why are there one inch black borders at the top and bottom of the picture during the movie?
Please help me can't you see i'm obviously challenged by it all :)

Now there's 4 people that looked at this post before me so I'm wondering what they were/are thinking :D
If you have these bars then I'd see it's prolly normal. I dare say they've caught your eye and now you're looking for them making it even worse.
There may a way of removing these 'bars' but that may mean you having to go into the TV's engineer settings -not recommended unless you know what you're doing.
If it's still under guarantee I'd get on to the manufacturer (or the supplier) and ask them to come and fix it (although I don't think it's broke really).
Give 'em a phone.
Hi,
i think you'll find you have black bars at the top and bottom of the picture because of the aspect ratio of the picture. I'll try and explain this but i reckon your best bet will be to check out the "Widescreen Unravelled" on the main page of DVDTimes. The link is down the left hand side of the page in the features box.
Ok, here goes my explanation.... :)
Your WS TV has a ratio of 16:9. The vast majority of films are film in the following rations:
1.85:1 or 2.35:1
If you do a bit of simple maths you find that the 1.85:1 ratio fits in nicely with the 16:9 screen (times the ratios by 9). If however you do the same with the 2.35:1 ratio you'll notice that your TV screen would need to have a ratio of 21.15:9 to fill the whole screen, hence the height and width of the picture are reduced (in effect anyway) so that the full width of the picture is on screen. Now because of the loss of picture height too, you end up with black bars at the top and bottom of your screen. That's about as simple a way i can think of describing it, but i'd seriously recommend checking out that link as it does it with nice pictures too and covers anamorphics too. I'm not even gonna start to try to explain that !!!! :)
Hope this in some way helps. ;)

snevillio - I think APPRIA is winding you up. :p
The 'black bars' watching 2.35:1 ratio (& wider) movies is entirely normal. Nothing you can do about that without cocking up the picture.
Your TV is approx 1.85:1 ratio shape so those movies should have no bars top & bottom. Although you will start getting bars at the sides with movies narrower than 1.85:1!! :p

Getting a bit slow mate ;)
Think it's too early in the day to get sense out of me !!!!! Didn't read your original post 100%. :)
When you say the film is 16:9 ratio, i take it you're getting this off the back of the DVD case? The studios sometimes put the aspect ratio down as "16:9 enhanced" or such like, which means it's anamorphic (but could be anamorphic 1.85:1 or 2.34:1)and not letterboxed, as done for 4:3 ratio TV's
I think if you go to a web site like:
www.play247.com or www.dvdboxoffice.com
and search for your title, i reckon you'll find the "actual" ratio is 2.35:1 anamorphic. Most web sites have such details to hand.
What's the film and which region is it from?
Maybe i should quit my job and join a typing pool? :)
