View Full Version : cheap flights to Malaysia
Malaysia airlines are doing cheap flights to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang etc) in May 2005, you need to book before Aug 31st 2004. Start from £250 return (around £300 with taxes). Normally around £600.
I can highly recommend KL where half decent accommodation in China Town can be got for around £10-£12/room/night
You can check prices/buy through www.ebookers.co.uk

had a quick look and can only find around £300 without taxes flights. Got any pointers to dates i should be checking?
thanks!
Where did you see this offer ?
For those looking to go to other points in Asia (Thailand?) then this might well be worth combining with flights from Air Asia (www.airasia.com) as they're a low-cost airline with a hub in KL and very cheap fares. They've currently got a KL-Bangkok return fare for £27 and less to Phuket. Don't think you can book as far in advance as May next year, but it should be cheap enough.

what's so wonderful about malaysia?
Its a great place to visit - great climate, good beaches, friendly people, fantastic mix of Chinese and Indian food, interesting history - what more do you want? - and an absolute steal at these prices....
That's a good deal from a great airline. If only they allow me to fly through to Bangkok for the same price...
I'm going there for Xmas but now I'm tempted to go in Summer as well!!! I'm paying £700 return prices at Xmas. This is a bargain.
what's so wonderful about malaysia?
I have to second what John Murray said. It is a very nice place to visit, the only down side is that alcohol prices are a bit steep when compared to the value of everything else. Oh and unless they have cracked down recently a great place for software.

Is this place suitable for kids (2 years old)
Is this place suitable for kids (2 years old)
I would say yes, but do not speak from experience. The biggest worry might be mosquitoes and the other flying things, but this would not be a problem in any built up area, only if you go out in the wilds and if you take precautions and apply them rigorously that wouldn't have to be an issue.
I was nothern Thailand (I realise we are talking a different place altogether) a couple of years ag and was pleasently suprised at large number of families with kids. The children seemed to be enjoying themselves no end.
I should have said that I went there last year for a month. I went to both islands and would say Malaysia is a fine place to take kids. The flights here will be to the main land (1 of the islands), to Kuala Lumpar which is much more modern than most of our cities in the UK with stunning buildings including the tallest towers in the world and loads of other things. Out of the cities, things can get more basic, but there is a thriving tourist business there which means you can easily get around, oh and everyone speaks English!! Believe me there is so much to see you would not regret it!

They are worth looking at as they have sale on at moment. However the internet is only useful up to a point, if you don't know exactly what you want you ought to go in a bike a shop and get a feel of what you are after.
Soreee the above post belongs somewhere else. Are you Forums guys able to take it out? Thanks
Where is the best place to stay, and how easy is it to get to beaches etc?. IS this a 7 or 14 day holiday?
I would say it is at least a 14 day holiday, but when I went I only had a girlfriend to contend with and a month was not long enough, but as with most nice places, you see as much as you can in the time you have. So if you can only get flights for a week, well at least you won't find a deal like that elsewhere to take you to the other side of the world!

I would say 14 days simply because it takes 12-13 hours flying - Malaysia Airlines has one of the best seating spacing of the major airlines by the way. Getting to beach resorts is pretty easy Penang and Kuantan (gateway to a number of beach resorts on the east coast) are only an hours flight from KL. Looking at the airasia website a return from KL to Penang costs around £15.
You could easily do a 3 centre holiday. Penang is definitely worth a visit and Cheratting (spelling could be suspect) village on the east coast was a good place to chill out. Tiomen island is supposed to be great and other resorts I have heard good reports about are Pankor Laut & Lankawi

My girlfriend and I spent 3 days stop over in Langkawi on our way back from Australia at Xmas last year. We loved it - friendly people, great climate, interesting place and fantastic mix of food. Plus most things are pretty cheap. Whilst on Langkawi we stayed at the Berjaya Langkawi Beach Resort which was really peaceful - you could do as much or as little as you wanted, with plenty of trips to be booked. We stayed a night in the KL Airport hotel too which was pretty special too considering it cost less than a Travelodge!!! KL airport is right by the grandprix track and less than an hour from Kuala Lumpur by the new speedy train service. Really wished we had gone into KL itself so maybe now is the chance!
Well worth a pop of anyones money!!!

Went to Malaysia for our honeymoon. KL is a fantastic place, the people are genuinely nice, the place is clean, no crime and very cheap. Stayed in Langkawi for 10 days at the Pelangi Beach Hotel, our room was on the beach with fabulous views. It was paradise. The best thing about the beach is that there was hardly a soul on there other than ourselves, makes a difference from Benidorm!!

Hi....All this Malaysia talk is very handy as I`m just lookin into it...for me it looks like it will be £800 via the travel agent for a two centre hol next year...unless anyone suggests otherwise.....??
Malaysia is a great place - did a two centre a couple of years ago to KL and Borneo with Touchdown Travel
£320pp - all 5 star hotels
Got it for that because the other half works in the travel business, although I think this extends to airport workers etc other travel staff etc.
good place to check out if you qualify - http://www.touchdown.co.uk
Would def recommend it - best holiday i've been on - apart from vegas maybe
:D

Just booked myself - thanks OP!!!
Like I said before, we stayed at the Berjaya Beach Resort last time (Dec 2003) which wasn't too big and was very accommodating. The beach/pool/bar/restaurants/spa were fantastic and we had monkies playing on our balcony. We booked through the Malaysia Airlianes brochure at our local independant travel agent (not available on the web as far as I can see) and got this resort at 28 quid for the room and breakfast (for two) a night - not bad in itself.
Another fantastic hotel is th Datai - very nice indeed. We are thinking of staying there this time

Stick to KL and the tourist resorts, dont go to local villages, unless you want to see a bunch of lazy asses who do nothing but eat (with good reason though i suppse, the food is fantastic). I know this, cos my family are out there... who are a bunch of la.. ;)
One thing ive noticed about MY, this is in penang though - there is absolutely no graffitti anywhere ! iwas completely shocked, and i hope that doesn change.
This is bargain, esp it is around the summer period. I normally pay about £350 for a return ticekt, but thats around feb/march.

I would say to anyone who wants to get around the country a bit - get a hire car! I drove the length of the country about 4 years ago - they drive on the left and the roads are great - certainly in better nick than a lot of our A-roads :oh-hum:
I got right off the beaten track and visited some great villages, temples, rubber plantations, tea plantations etc...

the roads are absolute madness in penang!!
They drive like it is Mario Kart, get so close to your car, drive in between lanes and the funny thing is, no one even cares. While my cousin is drving like a crazed loon, im sitting in back with no seatbelts grabbing anything i can.

yeah thats the weirdest thing too !! i reckon they are all top quality drivers from all the training they get. My cousin is female, started driving when she was 15, and even back then she was wicked at driving.
phuket ....
It got nothing to do with "training"
In Maalysia/Singapore, it's because people love their cars there, as it is far more expensive compared to the UK. Imagine earning 6000 quid a year (above average wages in Malaysia) but pay 13000 quid for a Honda Civic Jazz. Import cars have duty tax of 200% in Malaysia.
In relative terms, you can buy in the UK a nice car with a year's wages (20000+ can get you a pretty decent car), but in Malaysia, you need 3 year's wages to get a decent car.
That said, property is way cheaper though.
They are just naturally impatient bunch when it comes to driving.
Regards
Alex
I can't believe it. I came rather late to this offer and it still seems to be available, but am awaiting confirmation of booking from ebookers. Thanks to original poster.
Booked a couple of days ago and forgot to say thanks (so saying it now !! :))
I done Langkawi and KL earlier this year as part of a Grand Prix package and the missus and i were keen to go back to spend longer. Langkawi is a beautiful island and there is so much to do.
I booked up so i fly to Lankawi and spend 8 nights nights there before taking an internal flight to KL and spend another 5 nights there. I fly back to Heathrow straight from KL. Total cost......£316 each !! Total bargain. Just a pity i had to spen £100 getting from Edinburgh to London (tickets were about £8 each way but airport tax came to £68  ). If anyone wants any info on KL or Langkawi feel free to ask
people who took advantage of the cheap flights may be interested to know that rooms have just been reduced in May (possibly other times also) at the 5* Crowne Plaza in Kuala Lumpur (£25 for a double no breakfast) - note full payment required at time of booking and there are no refunds for this rate, you can pay extra for more flexible rates.

Just search for Destination - Malaysia.
The reduced rates are still available just booked 4 nights in a Crown Plaza Club room for just over £30 per night, Bfast, Evening Drinks, Butler Service, Free Laundry etc
Normal Deluxe rooms are 154 MYR , approx £21. ( dates checked 9th May-13th May)
Thia is a very well rated hotel , also LRT station is only 1 min away .
Thanks for the info about hotel. I will be there end May early June, I would like to be able to get more info about Kualar Lumpar. Are you able to recommend websites or shall I ask you direct? Cheers

also this one for Hotel reviews/info :-

Hope this helps .
the hotel rates are ++ so you need to add 15% for the Crowne Plaza. The reference to not being able to find availability I think relates to the original flight deal which was quite some time ago and presumably finished.

In my travels I have always found the Rough Guides and Lonely Planet guides to be excellent. They have websites too so a quick google should get you some results. Failing that, and search through Amazon (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/redirect-home^QS^tag=thedvdforums-21^QA^site=dvd) should net you one of the books (I have the Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Rough Guide and it is invaluable.
