View Full Version : Which guitar effects pedal to buy??
I am going to get a new effects pedal for my Epi Les Paul. At the mo I am using a 7 year old Zoom 505 (yeah I know it is poo :oh-hum: ) and it just aint giving me the right sounds.
I have about £200 to spend and don't mind if it is new or second-hand. A friend has the Korg AX1500G which is decent and cheap but there are a lot of pedals on the market. I quite fancy the Boss GT6 which I have seen for about £225ish used.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone happens to have a decent pedal for sale let me know...................
Yeah, I'd go with the GT6. I have the predecessor to it - the GT5 (which is pretty much the same thing, the GT6 just has knobs instead of buttons) - and I've never needed to buy any other effects since I bought it 7 years ago.
I've only really used it for direct recording, I haven't used it for playing live, so amp simulation is a must for me and the GT5 does it brillantly. My only gripe is that I've never been able to get a decent dual-rectifier sound out of it, but it is highly tweakable so maybe I'm just doing something wrong.
Effects-wise it's got everything I'll ever need, and, admittedly, some stuff I don't (monophonic synth? er, right :suspect: ) But hey..
So, yeah.. one vote for the GT6/GT5 :)
I had a boss GT-3 which I didn't get on well with - I didn't need an amp modeller too. Sold it and got the boss ME-50 which I think is superb.
i've got an AX1500 but only becuase I got it for £80 second hand and so far it's done what it says on the tine. The wah isn't too hot, but everything else seems to be hunky dory. I use it for a load of recording so the amp simulators come in very nice.
Rather than start a new thread, what would you recommend as a 'fisher price - my first guitar pedal' then? I'm only starting to learn but would like to muck about with a few sounds so something relatively cheap and cheerful would be best.

Depends what sort of sound you are after, wether you want muti FX or single stompboxes... and to be honest I really wouldnt bother till you are fairly proficent as it just takes away from your practice time when you are learning.

Personally I would always go for single unit stompboxes than multi effects processors. The sound quality is generally far better and in the end a guitar player should always be looking at getting the best tone from their set up, which IMHO you just can't get with a multi fx unit.

Nah, I wouldn't say far better. Sure, if you're an eccentric audiophile Eric Johnson-alike you may hear a slight difference when the guitar is played on it's own.. but once it's put behind a full band or recording what little difference there is to the sound pretty much disappears anyway.
As to mjb1975's question, if you're just after a single effect to mess about with, I'd suggest getting a delay pedal. There's much fun to be had with delays, whilst also being a effect used by many many musicians in a variety of styles/genres. It's right up there with reverb in the 'important effects' rankings for me.

....I'd say a good chorus pedal as well.
