View Full Version : Flatmate killing shared connection. Can I split 50/50?

Got Virgin broadband coming into the shared house, and I've got a Linksys WAG54g router allowing myself and a flatmate to share the connection.

I can see the "Internet Connection" is 100mbps, but my "Wireless Connection" to the router only ever reaches 36mbps (I have a 56mbps card). Does this mean flatmate has the bulk of the bandwidth?

If so, is it worthwhile me looking into trying to split the connection 50/50? Is that possible?

She's wired into the router, and spends all her time on Napster which makes anything I want to do (CounterStrike esp.) play really badly. Even browsing is pretty sluggish. :help:

Oh man, she's just gone out! Got to get on the CS when I can...

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Youre talking about your lan speeds when you say you're only getting 36mbps, whats being affected is your wan speed which is what 512kbps or 1mbps?

Her constant use of napster will eat your wan speed and something like netlimiter could help.

only if it's installed on her system he is using a router so either he needs to do it on the sly or ask her ? your not scared of her are you ? hehe joke ;)

also remember the wireless may affect the speed as if the connection isnt perfect the quality and speed may reduce.

the 36mb is nothing to do with how fast you are getting on the net, if she is online, it'll not only take up bandwidth, it also kill your ping.

If she's downloading from Napster, might as well forget about getting decent pings for CS no matter what you do.....best to organise some sort of schedule for when you want to play. Or do what my house mate used to do, have the downloads running on a shared server and stop them when he wanted to play CS and start up again afterwards...
