On my new Sanyo TV, I have the following
FULL
NATURAL
ZOOM 14:9
TITLE IN 14:9
ZOOM 16:9
TITLE IN 16:9
NORMAL
What are you suppsed to use the most?
What formats are best ?
There isn't one answer to your question, because it depends on the format of the signal (which may be 4x3 or 16x9) coming from the source, and the content of that signal (which may be pretty much anything).
So, I'm going to give you a (hopefully) simple way to work it out....
First thing:
If you have DVD, set the DVD player to output 16x9 (or wide).
Ditto for $ky or Freeview.
Next thing:
If it looks right, it is right.
By which I mean:
- circles should be round, not oval. People should be people-shaped. etc.
- you should hardly ever (or never) have black edges around all four sides of a picture. Black on two sides (top & bottom, or left & right) is to be expected depending on what you are watching.
Do you not have an automatic mode?

Do you not have an automatic mode?
Yes I do
Yes I do
In which case, let the TV automatically adjust for the incoming signal. Manually change it if you feel you want it to look something different

Generally:
Digital TV is 16:9
Analogue TV is 14:9
Anamorphic DVDs are 16:9 (if the player is set up properly, it will take care of any 4:3 stuff)
Non-Anamorphic DVDs will need to be zoomed in on.
