Just under a year ago I purchased from Marshall Ward a Philips VCR/DVD combi (model: DVD755VR) that was posted in the Bargain Forum section. For the past couple of months there has been a fault with the VCR part of the machine but I never got around to doing anything about it as I mainly only use the DVD part which works ok.

Yesterday Marshall Ward sent me some bumf through the post reminding me that during this time I have been covered by the manufactures warranty and this will come to an end on 31st August 2004, and Marshall Ward want me to take out their extended 12 month guarantee at a cost of £54.50 (I don't think I'll bother!)

Although it's covered by the manufacturers warranty, who do I contact with regards to rectifying the fault (or exchanging the machine)? Are Marshall Ward responsible as the retailer or will they tell me to contact Philips?

Its up to Marshall Ward but it may be quicker to go to Philips direct

I can tell you this much - they no longer sell or stock the 755VR. My friend got one after she saw mine but they sent her the upgraded model. When I questioned it they told us the original one was no longer available.

Thinner model, less space taken up, looks nice - downside? No hack yet to make it multiregion. It's R2 only and after spending months looking around and asking for help she still hasn't come up with a hack to change it.

If you can get it fixed then do so. Exchange it as a last resort (unless you don't care if it's R2 only)

I'm not sure if I would be responsible for all the P&P costs if I went through Philips direct whereas going through MW I suppose I can simply arrange collection by their courier. I'll give MW a ring to see what the score is. - The FAQ's on their website only mention about returning goods under their 14 day home approval guarantee but nothing about faulty goods under statutory rights.

Here's an update but I'm not sure how I should approach this one.
I got an email from MW regarding the faulty Philips DVD755VR combi. They said to return it for inspection with a completed returns form giving full details of the fault. If I would like a replacement visit their website to place an order.

No problem there but (like Willow said) they no longer sell this model and even if they did the correct price for these should have been £229.99, but were advertised on their site for £99.99 (minus 20% discount on 1st orders) = £79.99.

There are 3 dvd/vcr combi's on the MW website with prices ranging from £150 to £229.99. If I go for the replacement but only paid £79.99, will I have to make up the difference? Or, as the correct price for the Philips should have been £229.99 do you think they will allow a straight swap for their most expensive one?

I would have thought you will have to pay the difference, i would go via Philips if you want to keep the unit.
