View Full Version : Help-Can't Keep Favorites in Order (IE6)

Don't know what's going on but for some reason I can't get IE to keep my favorites in alphbetical order. Whenever I add a new folder I use the sort by name function and then it stays in that order. Now, when I close the window and reopen the browser, they aren't in alphabetical order anymore.

I've run spybot and adaware. Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?

A fix:

Export them then import them.

It normally fixes it for me.

Thanks but it didn't work. It seems as though my old folders stay in order but any new ones don't. I've tried deleting one folder and then making a new one but it still keeps putting it at the end of my favorites list. It sorts fine but as soon as I shut the window down it loses its place. I've tried using organise favorites but this is ridiculous!

Have you tried going to the folder where all your favourites are stored and then putting them in alphabetical order there?

Yep, that's the odd thing: they're in alphabetical there, just not in the drop down menu. Seems like every bookmark now just gets added to the bottom of the list and no matter what I do, it stays there.

Check your favourites folder isn't read-only or something stupid.

Nope, checked that as well. I think you're right though, it must be something stupid and simple: it's just I have no idea what on earth I could have done.

Perhaps I should see if I can reinstall IE. Anyone know how to repair it or do I simply uninstall it?

IIRC, if you go to add/remove progs, you get the option to repair IE6 before uninstalling.

I think somethings going a little pear shaped here. I don't get the option, it just removes one of the hotfixes. Further, I can't get IE to now remember window positions at all and it doesn't like updating existing favourites now, it says its updating them but it doesn't - I have to go into the properties of the favourite and change it manually.

I've run all the items in the spyware thread that seem applicable but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this. Any comments would be gratefully received before this drives me up the wall.

UPDATE: just fixed it by opening the favorites list in the start menu and sorting that by name as well. For some reason (perhaps someone can explain) this has done the trick and they're now staying in order. Now if I could only get it to remember window sizes and positions I'd be a happy bunny.

Thanks though to all who tried to help: it was much appreciated.

Since IE6 came out you no longer get the option of Repair\Uninstall. It just uninstalls.

Open your window to the maximum, hold down SHIFT press the X in the top right corner. Shutdown IE and OE if it's running. Then restart both of them.

It's probably because they are the "master" favourites as opposed to the mirrored favourites. You were attempting to alphabetasise the ones in the window at the side of your screen I take it.

Point 1 noted with thanks.

Point 2: I've tried this before but to no avail. It works provided the initial IE6 window is open but if I shut down IE6 and then reopen it, it remembers the placement of the first window but all others simply open in the far left corner. The other aspect of this is that if I use Ctrl N to open a new window, it never opens the status bar whereas if I use the IE icon on the desktop, it does.

Point 3: Yep, although I don't use the side of the screen, I just use the menu bar at the top of the IE6 window. Thing is, I don't really understand why it stopped working as I've only being doing the same as I've always done. Still, I'm just happy it's working again as sorting them every time was irritating.

Cheers for the suggestions!

Update: guess what? yep, it's gone again and this time sorting the start menu is having no effect.
