Just been looking at the AV setup thread, and noticed that people have some very nice cabinets.

I was using the one that came with my 28" Toshiba Widescreen TV up until now, but theres no way in hell my new Pioneer Amp will fit underneath

So what I really need is a nice sturdy cabinet that will fit:

DVD Player
AV Amp
Playstation 2
Dreamcast

Without being overly large.

Wheres the best place to browse online, only place I could think of was Ikea, and that was naff.

I went through this process about a year ago. I could never fit all of my kit into a normal supplied with TV cabinet so I decided to build one. After visiting B & Q upteen times I found that it would be better to buy one.

I bought one from BIG W, and now I have got all my kit in it and room for more. The only downside is that because I dint put the back on it is not very secure.

Managed to buy it for around 50 quid so not a bad deal.

I bought an entertainment stand from Index for £39.99:

I don't have a widescreen tv though, but im sure one would go on it ok, i have a huge 29" pan scan telly on it, it fits my amp, my sony dvp-cx850 200 dvd carousel player, my ntl digital box and my playstation!! Its self assembly and it is quite sturdy!
And that little gap at the bottom fits my centre speaker excellently! Suits me down to the ground, maybe it will suit u too!

Thats not suitable really, but thanks anyway

Come on guys, I'm sure more than 2 people have Cabinets that didn't come with the TV

I saw that one from Ikea in the AV picture thread, but thats a bit too wide and a bit too low.

Don't rule out building your own. After looking around, I decided there wasn't anything that fulfilled my needs so I built one.

It's made from 18mm MDF, covered with Ronseal Paint and Grain, then varnished which gives a very authentic looking finish. B&Q cut all the pieces to size, so all that was needed was the treatment with Paint and Grain, followed by some precise measuring and drilling.

The finished article looks great and has loads of room for all my gear. It cost around £60-70, but that included a few tools and materials that can be used for other things.

I would post some pictures, but I don't have a digital camera.

Depends how much you want to spend

I bought a cheapish one (£70) when I got my Wega telly, but it struggled with the weight. When we moved house last Xmas I spent more and got a dedicated SoundStyle AV unit.

It's solid maple with satin aluminium posts, it gorgeous and swallows all my kit with no problems. Costs mind, at £350 - but worth it.

I've got my Panny 36" sitting on an Ikea Bonde tv bench.

I was a bit worried about the weight of the tv but this thing is incredibly strong (not like some of their stuff!) and obviously matches all the other Bonde bits in the lounge.

I did make a pair of glass doors to go on the front for baby proofing it. The design has an overhanging top and bottom so made fitting the doors a piece of **** and they look like they're meant to be there. The centre speaker sits on one of the shelves which is obviously slightly off centre but I'll be buggered if I can tell when listening to it.

There is a big trench (for want of a better word) along the back that the spaghetti of cables drops into and makes the whole thing sit against the wall perfectly.

If you want to look at Ikea stuff, go to the US site, they have the whole catalogue on line and the ranges are all but identical.

RH - where do you put your centre. I have looked at these before, but with the centre on the second shelf, my kit won't go on the bottom one.

Just

It goes on the middle shelf - my kit fits ok underneath (amp, CD, DVD, VCR and Digibox).

Anymore kit though and it'll have to go on the TV - which Mrs Radiohead won't be too happy about.

But a new handbag might fix that

:D

I'd put my Centre speaker ontop of the TV probably, still not sure it would fit a Pioneer VSX859RDS, Toshiba 100E, Playstation 2 and Dreamcast under that.

Cheeky sod, i have just aquired This (http://www.ikea.co.uk/product_presentation/show.asp?ProductNumber=00009861&type=III) magnificent peice of furniture, and my TV is sitting comfortably a' top it :) It gets the job done (admittedly, in my bedroom, not sure if i'd fancy it in my sitting room, as it matches nothing i have in there ;) ), and seems sturdy enough to me. It supports a 28" tv, video, dvd player and an ITV digi box (can't afford an amp yet :( goddam nicam sound only for me) with a shelf to spare, and a central space (for an amp or a centre speaker p'raps?) waiting to be filled :)

Yeah, That one is quite nice, but at 1.5 metres, it's a tad too long.

It would be alright on it's own, but then I'd have some Tannoy Floorstanding speakers either side

GAmbrose, christ no mate that looks like it would collapse with a portable on it!

The one I've got is like four of those joined together, split vertically into two amp/dvd etc and a bit sized bits and then a shelf in each of those bits.

It has a substantial cross brace in the middle of it which goes about 75% of the way across hiding all the cables behind it. Needs to be substantial for an 80+ kg tv!

I've got my amp, dvd player, video, sat box and currently the centre speaker (Tannoy Mc), so there's plenty of room for most people.

It's 107 x 60 x 40cm.

You can cobble a load of other bits on it to produce one of those nasty american type 'entertainment centres' should good taste overcome you.

Oh, and it's a nice birch veneer as well.

Sounds Ideal, but I can't find it on the Ikea US or UK websites.

I wanted something that would fit in with the rest of my decor so I went to an antique dealer and got a nice wooden cabinet and did a few adjustments to it. It is good if you want to hide all your equipment as i can shut the doors and it looks like a nice piece of furniture. It fits in with the W.A.F (wife acceptence factor)! Probably not the best material for audio quality but its what we wanted.
