View Full Version : True Crime
Is True Crime worth picking up for £9.95?
It seems a bargain to me for such a recent game
One for the gaming forum...

I enjoyed it.
It's kind of like a more detailed version of GTA3 (altho not quite as good).
You can drive around in whatever vehilce you can steal or get (you earn various police cars at certain stages).
You can either go around solving general crimes, which earn you badges to spend on learning new skills (reload quicker, handbrake turn, etc) or play thru the games own storyline.
I found it quite fun to play, not as simple as GTA3 but a good laugh none the less.
For £9.95 I'd say it's a good buy.
Spot all the celebrity voice talent as well.
I thought it was a lot better on the Xbox than the PC. The PC version seemed to have lots of graphical drawing problems on my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and also the sound didnt work properly with my nForce2 onboard soundcard.
It was a true crime that it ever got released tbh.

I rented on the xbox, when it first came out and hated the control system then I brought it for the Gamecube for £7.99 and it played better. It's still better than crap like Driver 3 and enter the matrix

Thought this was even worse than Driver 3.
One to avoid.

I used to live in LA. So rather than play the game I just enjoyed driving around my old haunts. Seeing as it's an accurate recreation of CA.
As game, I just couldn't get into it. One for the kids.

Get it for £2 cheaper, see this thread: http://thedvdforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=308692
Aye complete gash, even with poor games I usually put in at least a couple of hours, with this 30 minutes was all it took for me to get back in my car and down to GAME to swop it.
Dreadful mish mash of styles - avoid like the plague
I'm going to buck the trend, I thought it was pretty enjoyable. Well worth £9.95. Sure it aint perfect, but once you get used to the initially dodgy controls there is a lot of fun to be had. The main game is not that long but there is quite a lot of other unlockables and side missions to complete.
I just got this one on a cheap offer in a gaming store and am quite enjoying it. Certainly not as much fun as GTA VC, not as playable either, but not a bad gaming experience. Made a nice change to play the good guy. Although the quality of the loading (PS2?) when driving from one area to the other is fairly irritating - the screen slows or partially freezes very briefly over short distances.
There are a few things I don't get though. When the criminals run and you chase them and beat them to a pulp, you lose a +1 on your badge thingy. How are you supposed to stop and arrest someone who runs without beating them or shooting them?
I thought true crime was ok and enjoyed it enough to actually complete it. Despite the bugs (which i never noticed initially but can now see like the plague) its still much more of an enjoyable game than really crap games like Driver 3 and The Getaway which are 2 of my worst games in recent years.

I found that it depends on the severity of the crime.
If they just surrender the you can arrest them (using the arrest key).
If they put up a fight then you can beat them up then arrest them.
If they shoot at you or are armed with a firearm then you can shoot them.
So it's OK to shoot an armed kidnapper who's firing at you.
But it's not OK to blow away a guy for arguing in the street.

Had it on GB and quite liked it, althought admittedly i've never really played GTA which it seems a rip-off of.
Its kind of odd in that no one element is really satisfying, the driving isn't as good as the best example of realistic driving (driver 3 IMO), the shooting bits are fun but quite easy and a bit samey. The worst bit is the fighting bit I think. The final boss fights are stupidly hard, and thats manly due to camera probs, it flips round constantly meaning you can never be certain which direction to press to block. Fights become just a reptition of punching & kicking, the combos are only for when your opponents are dazed, and the whole grapple part seems entirely unnecessary.
But despite that it makes a fairly fun whole, TBH the best bit seems to be just driving around solving crimes.
