I have a couple of movies in avi format but the sound on them is very low. I have to turn the pc volume and speaker volume to max to hear it just a bit. Why is this? Any other format or audio file is normal. Anyone know why?

Have you checked the soundcard settings on your system? Make sure the volume is up as far as it can go. In Win98 there is a volume control in the system tray, right click it and push the little bar to the maximum setting. If you don't have any luck there. Then look towards whatever player you are using to play the files. It may have a setting as to what level sound the application should output. For instance I have VideoLan and it constantly resets the audio to the mid point when ever I start it. I have had the official DivX player and it had a setting to play audio at various levels. Meanwhile BSPlayer was using an entirely different application it had found during installation in order to play some files.

If all is as it should be then get GSpot - a codec identifier and point it at the files. If will inform you what codecs you require if any to play the files.

Also something to consider is that you may have "blown" your speakers - Have you been playing any loud music before you noticed the sound had faded? Do you have another set of speakers you can use to "test" your system with? If so get them out and plug them in. For that matter, have you recently unplugged and replugged the speakers into your system? It has been known that they were plugged into the incorrect inputs on the soundcard resulting in the audio being lower than it should be.

If you're watching an avi using the AC3 audio codec, go into the control panel and increase the volume (AC3 Filter)
