Im getting a new PC on thurs and I want to copy all my files over to the new one via network.

Both are running XP and both have ethernet cards.

Will getting an ethernet cable do the job? and is it difficult to get working etc?

Cheers

Just get a crossover lead mate.

I found a spare Ethernet cable today at work, is this possible to use?

No, it needs to be a crossover cable. The wires are moved around so that transmit at one end goes to recieve at the other end. If you try the cable you have found, it will be transmiting to the transmit pairs at the other end. You can pick a crossover up from B&Q quite cheaply.

Nope - you need a crossover cable. It's a special type of Ethernet cable, where the wires are crossed over at one end.

Im looking at a new HD, Big pockets have THIS (http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?product=RT-HD1006&main=&session=12d352b2660ce15df783976bb73f481b)

Is 7200 RPM enough? or what should I be looking for?

Also, can you recommend a good DVD RW with Dual layer (for the future)

7200 rpm is about as fast as it gets in IDE, the 2Mb cache is a bit mean - thats why it's cheap.

120Gb are usually abut £41 +vat at ebuyer, check the prices at scan.co.uk on their todays offers page.

For DVD-RW's anything by Pioneer and NEC will be a safe bet, they seem to be the leading brands in the DVD burner market at the moment...

and as said above, 7200rpm is pretty much your standard drive speed (obviously excluding cheetahs/raptors etc) at the moment and is more then enough
