I bought my first Region 1 disc recently (Shrek) and everything is fine apart from a slight flickering at the bottom of the screen - most notably in the bottom left of the screen.

The flickering is by no means bad enough to make the DVD unwatchable, although I would of course prefer it not to be there. However, being a newbie to Region 1 discs, I am concerned that I may be doing some harm to the TV. The TV is a 28" Widescreen Sanyo and my player is a chipped Toshiba SD110e. Can anyone put my mind at rest, or is it possible to damage your TV by playing Region 1 discs.

Sorry if this is a dumb question or if this has been asked before.

Steve.

Welcome to the Forums :)

You can't damage your TV playing Region 1 DVDs (or any other -although the Phantom Menace may cause some severe damage).

Are you using a SCART cable and does you DVD player go straight to the TV?

Thanks for the advice.

Yes I am using a scart cable and it does go straight to the RGB socket on the TV.

The RGB socket? you mean the SCART? So you've set the player to RGB?

You could try swithing the player's output to composite or s-video (assuming your TV accepts s-video) and seeing what happens. If the fault is still there try another SCART cable and then another Region 1 disc and if it's still there there must be a fault.

If it was me I'd try the player (and SCART) on another TV if you can -this'll show if there's a problem with the player or TV.

Yes the player is set to RGB. I'll try your other suggestions, but I only get this slight flickering with the, so far, one Region 1 disc I have? I get a perfect picture with the Region 2 discs (even Phantom Menace).

NTSC is of course different but that's not the fault of the Region 1 disc. There must be a problem and following what I said will unearth it :)

You get this sometimes with NTSC discs, depending on how your TV handles it. My Sony for instance flickers at the top, so I went into the service menu and shifted the picture up a couple of pixels to hide it in the overscan.
