I was under the impression that the special edition won't happen until x-men 2 is made and as that hasn't started yet surely we're looking at very late 2002 or 2003 for the special edition of the first film :( The only things I can think of that were missing off the normal version was a commentary and maybe some more documentaries?

It came from an official source a while back but I can't fint the link now.

I remember reading an interview with Bryan Singer where he said that he wanted to integrate the deleted scenes (and not only the ones that are included in the normal DVD) into the movie but FOX told him that they wanted to publish a normal DVD first and then a real Special Edition when the second movie is released in the cinemas. He wasn't too happy about this.
I don't have a link because it was printed in a magazine.

In Toronto last November, Singer told me he was quoted out of context in the New York Post story; the piece was about the potential of DVD as a storage format, and Singer was speaking about what he'd want to see in some imaginary years-from-now special edition, not talking about an actual upcoming disc.

The existing disc is the only version of "X-Men" we're likely to see for quite some time. Buy it with a clean conscience.
