I know im in the minority on this one, but I absolutely loved this film, not to take anything away from the other movies. its been years since i've seen it, and can't really say where I think this falls in rating the all six original crew movies, but here is my stab at it today.
Best to worst
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier
My list changes from time to time :-) But since getting all the other trek films on DVD, this is my order for the first 6. I remember at one time ordering as follows:
ST4
ST2
ST6
ST1
ST5
ST3
When I got ST3 (not expecting to like it at all), I was amazed at how well this film held up, aside from the sometimes horrible Special Effects and any of the scenes on the Genesis Planet, though I do have a soft spot for Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon, classic casting.
When I finally see the first film, I have a feeling my order will change again.

Actually im getting mine shipped from an online retailer for free :-) as a reward for a Customer Service fiasco. They said it shipped out on the 2nd, but it shoudl take at least 2 weeks to get to me here in Norway. And with the mail situation in the states, better make that 3 weeks. But im checking my box every day.
I love this film, the transfer and sound are excellent and the features are outstanding, especially the Enterprise Promo and Phase II documentery.
Is there any hidden easter eggs!

LOL!
I would also like to add my praise to Paramount and thank them for allowing Bob Wise the opportunity to finish the film in the way that he intended.
The Picture quality is very good and they have really done an excellent job with the sound. The Dolby 5.1 mix is sharp and every sound comes into its own especually the music score.
The feautures I found to be fascinating especually the documentaries and also the text commentary by Michael Okuda I found to be very informative and added even more insight into the film.
I confess to being a fan of Star Trek, not to the extremes of dressing up like a Klingon or a Vulcan but the sheer enjoyment I get from Star Trek as a whole.

Acknowledging the fact that I'll probably be dismissed as a sad old Trekkie, I think it has actually improved with age. I remember being slightly disappointed when it was released, but now it just seems a joy from start to finish.

So many films, so little time...

Oh im sure you wont be dismissed by me. I think I had an appreciation for this film when it was released. I haven't seen it in so long though and thats why It is still under the 2,3, and 4 movies. Since getting 2 and 3, I really consider them superb sequels, the latter of the former. I think ST1 may stand alone in some ways, and in the long run may be the movie in the franchise that gets remembered.
Checking my mail box with a certain giddiness these days.

My fav ST movies in order
1. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
2. Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
3. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
4. Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
5. Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock
98. Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier
Really, if i was the boss at paramount, i would have disowned the movie, destroyed all the prints and pretend it never existed! It's one of the worst movies of all time!

Oh I used to be pretty harsh with Star Trek 5 too, but it has its nice moments. Something about that one screams of editing nightmare. I'd love to see a directors cut of that one! You have to admit there are some classic classic funny moments, like Uhuras legs :-) "Hello boys!".
Being the sorry ****** that I am, I do watch these films over and over and find that ST5 does have some good moments, but overall, not the greatest effort. The big surprise for me is that Star Trek 6 has lost something for me after multiple viewings. I used to enjoy that one alot more, but it just hasnt held up for me.

Is it right that paramount is going to release all of the star trek movies in this special edition format?

About bleedin time, but of course Paramount just had to release the non-anamorphic, non-SE's first. Not because they wanted to make money, but to keep the fans happy.

I’m glad I didn’t by them the first time around. I will start with TMP first and go from there.
Does anyone know when Wrath of Khan is going to be released?

OK, just had a look on The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html), who are saying late June for 'Wrath of Khan SE'. As to the time between each  who knows? It may be longer between the early films: trying to pull everything together from a project 20 yrs old is gonna take a while longer than something in the last 5 for instance!
Let's not forget 'Star Trek: Nemesis' (ST: X) is due next year, as well as the various TV series on DVD over the next few years. I wouldn't be shocked to see SEs tying in with other merchandise.....
Just watched it. I've been a Trekker all my life & was really looking forward to this 'new improved' version. Very disappointing. The pacing, dialogue, acting & plot are all just as atrocious as I remember. Snazzy new CGI will never make a bad movie any good. You just can't polish a turd.
:(
I was surprised how much I enjoyed it - I haven't seen it all the way through since I watched it in the cinema in 1980, at the tender age of nine.
Sure, there are a few sequences that are just waaaaaay too long (the reveal of the Enterprise in dry dock and the journey through the cloud) and the whole thing has the feeling of an overextended TV episode, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it held my attention.
I was very disappointed by the Phase II documentary, though - at a measly 15 minutes or whatever, it's nowhere near long enough. An hour would be a more appropriate duration in which to try and do the subject justice (hell, a very thick book was written about it, which I found extremely interesting - and I'm not a Trek anorak!)
There's an awful lot more to the Phase II story than is told in that documentary... I have a suspicion that it (the doco) was made primarily as an excuse to include the test footage, and not because they had any desire to explain the history of Phase II in depth.
