With this due for a December 4th R1 release, does anyone know why the pilot episode is not included? Is it feature length? In hindsight not very good? I missed the series on TV so any info would be appreciated.

I believe its owned by a different studio, But I picked up a zone free (labeled zone 3) Twin Peaks Pilot at HKfliX.com.
I'm not sure if its still available.
It just arrived about a week ago in fact, and to my surprise it was the 2 hour pilot episode and not the Made for TV movie with the tacked on ending that is available in the UK on VHS.
Quality was ok. Sound was a bit uneven. I had to turn my sub woofer off cuz the house was shaking. But all in all, a steal at 16 USD.
Talk is that you probably wont see the pilot on DVD anytime soon anywhere else.
Good luck.

The pilot was 90 mins (a 2 hour US tv time slot with all the ads etc taken out.), and was excellent, and if you haven't seen the show before then the rest of season one probably won't make a great deal of sense without seeing the pilot. It sets ups the whole story and introduces the characters.
I don't think they're gonna sell a huge amount of the box set without the pilot, since most potential buyers aren't in the know as to how to get hold of the pilot.
I got my copy of the pilot from ebay. It's a perfectly good transfer.

Adam is this the same hong kong release I was talking about? And yes, with the ads taken out, its about 90 minutes. Its often referred to as the 2 hour pilot though.
Jim
The series on home video not having the pilot included is nothing new. Back in the mid-90s when the series was released on VHS in the UK you had to get the pilot seperately from Warners (and that was the 'movie' version with the terrible tacked on ending)
It was funny 'cause at Uni we were shown the 1st 2 episodes as part of our studies and even the lecturer didn't know that the pilot was seperate (some expert eh!). Turns out I was the only one who had ever even seen the show and knew what the hell was going on!
Anyway I digress.
Boogerman - you WILL need to see the pilot before the rest of the series. It is available from quite a few places (I got it from eBay). It's not a limited run or anything and more and more copies seem to be on the market so it should not cost more than $20 US.
It seems that due to rights issues the only way to release it was via this strange loophole that exists that means it could be freely released in the Hong Kong territory and nowhere else. But quite obviously lots of Twin Peaks fans worldwide are buying it! It's worth having and sets up the series perfectly (and of course the rest of it makes little sense without it!)

Here is a link to where I got mine. I have heard that it is now out of print, and according to this site, I may be correct. Good luck.

yeah, i didnt want to risk it so as soon as I found out about this release, i just grabbed it. How did you like the cheesy trailers that come with it :-) I laughed my ass off.
Jim
I bought this on October 15 from http://www.hivizone.com/ on 15 October for $14 USD inc P&P, they shipped it four days later and it arrived within a week so it's probably worth trying there.
Works out at about a tenner, whereas I've seen them put up for auction on Yahoo and ebay with a starting price of £30 GBP
Hope this helps

PS: Can't comment on transfer etc as I haven't watched it yet :)

Haven't seen it either and I'm not going to untill I have the whole series as I hate waiting for more episodes.
what happened in the terrible ending they added for the TV pilot? i've only seen the HK DVD version (i also got it from hivizone, they seem really good) does it ruin the whole series with the extra ending?
the thing with no name

details below;
they 'worked out' that Bob was in the basement of the hospital, went downstairs, he admitted it all, then they shot him!
Wrapped up nicely thank you.
Rubbish, tacked on ending which ignored the whole of the rest of the series. Be glad you didn't see it.

Yes, FaustBos, it's the same.
It's funny how everyone's so down on the 'movie' version of the pilot. You'd think it would at least have some rarity value for the Lynch 'completists'.

Hum, perhaps, the ending really was horrible though. I bought the VHS in London back in 1990 when I was doing some work at the company I worked with. The series was still playing live in the states so no one knew who killed laura yet. Hehehe. So I've watched it a few times now, as you say, for rarity value. But I doubt I'd ever get it on disk.
That said, when I ordered my DVD, I thought it WAS the UK ending version so I was pleasently surprised when i found it wasn't. I only decided to get it because i felt the pilot would never make it onto disc in my life time anyway.

Is the Pilot episode "Fire Walk With Me"
I cant find it anywhere on that hivizone site, can someone send a link?
Cheers all

Arkham, I believe the pilot edisode is called `Pilot'. Fire Walk With Me was the tie-up-all-the-loose-ends-when-the-series-gets-cancelled film (please correct me someone if I'm wrong).
Thanks to all for the info, and links. Interestingly (perhaps?) dddhouse.com have the pilot (at least has the same cover art as FaustBos' link - though currently out of stock), and that's listed as a new release here. (http://www.dddhouse.com/cgi-local/product.cgi?product_id=1726&category_id=19) .
Edge, if you've any tips how to find this on the hivizone website I'd be greatful, their site has always confused the ....... out of me.

okay, it's like this:
Pilot "Twin Peaks"
Series: Episodes 1 - 29 (or 2 - 30, if you count the pilot as episode 1)
Movie prequel "Fire Walk with me" (should only be viewed AFTER watching the entire series!)
hope that helps!

Managed eventually to find (and order!) on the Hivizone site, thanks for the hint though Matt. I did see somewhere that this was a new R3 region free release on August 23rd(?) 2001, so surprised about the comments about OOP.

Confuses the .... out of me too :)
As Matt Sandbrook posted, it's in the special DVD titles section. On my pc it looks like a blank page once the browser says it has loaded, but if you scroll to the far right, it's the third one down :D

My disc is actually labeled Region 3, but its definitely zone free, so perhaps its the same release. Let us know!

yeah, it must have been reissued 'cause my copy (from original run) has the Republic Pictures 'Silver Screen' flash down the side of the front cover and the DVD case is over size.
The 're-issue' (which is not a limited run) uses a regular size dvd case and doesn't include the flash on the cover. Disc is identical though.

Yes the whole thing is pretty confusing.
Basically (to all who don't know): Warner own the rights to the pilot but flat out refused to sell them to Artisan (the basts). In a recent chat with Warner they were asked if they had any plans to release the pilot themselves (since they won't let Artisan do it), they're answer was "we don't know".
Great! :(
Oh well. What you need: The cheap Hong Kong version of the pilot (the PROPER version no less without the awful ending tacked on) from one of the links above.
And then the Artisan first series.
Then the second series when they release it.
Then the New Line Special Edition of Fire Walk With Me (WITH the deleted scenes! ;))
But start with the cheap HK disc and go from there basically.

Thanks to everybody's advice on this thread. I have ordered the pilot from http://www.hivizone.com/ (at $9 you cannot really complain :) )
Now all I have to do is pre-order the R1 season 1.
